Wondrous Item, legendary

Each Dragon Mask has three stages with different properties. Each mask can only be awakened when Tiamat deems you worthy. Once you find or start wearing another mask, it will have the stage that Tiamat has already allowed on the other masks.

Curse: When this mask is worn, if Tiamat awakens it to the Second Stage, it becomes permanently affixed to your face. Only a Greater Restoration or Remove Curse spell cast at 8th level, or a Wish spell, can remove it.

First Stage - Wyrmling:

  • Dragon Breath: You can cast the Dragon's Breath spell a number of times equal to half your proficiency bonus (rounded down). The breath damage type is the same as the color of the dragon mask.

  • Dragon Sight: You gain darkvision out to 30 feet, or an additional 30 feet if you already have darkvision. Once per day, you can gain blindsight out to 30 feet for 1 minute.

  • Dragon Tongue: You can speak and understand Draconic. You also have advantage on any Charisma check you make against dragons that share the mask's color.

Second Stage - Adult:

  • Dragon Breath: The range of Dragon's Breath increases to 30 feet and is cast as a 3rd-level spell.

  • Dragon Sight: You gain darkvision out to 60 feet, or an additional 60 feet if you already have darkvision. Once per day, you can gain blindsight out to 30 feet for 5 minutes.

  • Dragon Companion: Once per day, you can substitute one use of Dragon's Breath to summon an Animated Breath. You can have only one of these companions per day, with a 50% chance of being able to summon it. Roll a percentile dice at the start of your day to determine if you can summon the creature. You will know whether you can summon it during the day. The ritual to summon the creature takes 10 minutes.

Third Stage - Ancient:

  • Dragon Breath: The range of Dragon's Breath increases to 60 feet and is cast as a 4th-level spell.

  • Damage Absorption: You have resistance to the mask's damage type. If you already have resistance to that damage type from another source, you gain immunity to that damage type.

  • Dragon Companion: You can now have two companions, with a 100% chance of summoning them. You can summon each one as an action.

  • Draconic Majesty: While wearing no armor, you can add your Charisma bonus to your Armor Class.

Fourth - Great Wyrm (Requires having at least 3 Masks):

  • Dragon Breath: You can now cast Dragon's Breath a number of times equal to your proficiency bonus. However, it has a recharge of 5-6. It is cast as a 6th-level spell, and the damage type includes all of the Dragon Masks you have equipped.

  • Damage Absorption: If you already have immunity to the damage type from another source, whenever you are subjected to damage of that type, you take none of the damage and regain a number of hit points equal to half the damage dealt.

  • Legendary Resistance (1/Day): If you fail a saving throw, you can choose to succeed instead.

  • Draconic True Form: Once per week, you can attempt to transform into a Dragon. You have a chance to transform equal to your character's level percentage. You must first make a Wisdom saving throw with a DC equal to 10 + your character level.

    • On a failure, you become an ancient dragon permanently and are under the influence of the Dragon Queen. Your character loses control and becomes an NPC at your DM's discretion.

    • On a success, you transform into an Adult Dragon for one hour, as if you had the Polymorph spell cast on you without restrictions on creature type and challenge rating. You can choose which color of dragon to become from the three masks you have equipped. If you are a spellcaster, you follow the rules for Spell Attack and Spell Save DC from the Dragon variant rule, but you only know the spells you knew before transforming. You retain all your abilities as a spellcaster, including divine spells.

Special Effects of Each Mask (Great Wyrm Version Only):

  • Black Dragon Mask:

    • Water Breathing: You can breathe underwater.
  • Blue Dragon Mask:

    • Lingering Shock: If you deal lightning damage to a creature, it can't take reactions until its next turn.
  • Green Dragon Mask:

    • Water Breathing: You can breathe underwater.
  • Red Dragon Mask:

    • Dragon Fire: If you deal fire damage to a creature or flammable object, it starts burning. At the start of each of its turns, a creature burning this way takes 1d6 fire damage. A creature that can reach the burning target can use an action to extinguish the fire.
  • White Dragon Mask:

    • Winter's Fury: While your current hit points are equal to or less than half your hit point maximum, you deal an extra 1d8 cold damage with your melee attacks.
