Wondrous Item, artifact

This item is a Huge ambulatory vehicle piloted by an attached Brain in a Jar named Edith, who was rescued from the Monastary of the Distressed Body (from the Lost Laboratory of Kwalish adventure module).

It is operated by energy cells at a rate of one cell per 24 hours when active. When active it resembles a giant lobster, and when inactive it resembles a huge iron barrel weighing 6,000 pounds. Up to five Medium or smaller creatures can fit inside, or six if the brain in a jar is removed. It has forward and side-facing windows (one large front and three per side), and the access hatch is in the rear.

Edith retains all of her abilities as a brain in a jar, though as she is within the confines of the vehicle, her blindsight does not extend outside of the vehicle unless the windows are open. The vehicle's sensors give her standard forward-facing sight when it is active. Edith is stir-crazy after her long confinement as a brain in a jar in the Monastary; she demands entertainment whenever possible and is eager to make full use of the vehicle's capabilities.

The vehicle’s control panel has a steering wheel as well as nine levers which can be moved either up or down. The vehicle has the following properties:

Armor Class: 20
Hit Points: 350
Speed: Walk 30 ft., swim 30 ft., climb 30 ft (but not backwards). Legs and tail must be extended for locomotion.
Damage Immunities: poison, psychic
Damage Resistances: Acid

To be used as a vehicle the apparatus requires one pilot, a role performed by Edith if she is conscious. While the apparatus's hatch is closed, the compartment is airtight and watertight. The compartment holds enough air for 30 hours of breathing divided by the number of breathing creatures inside.

The apparatus floats on water. It can also go underwater to a depth of 500 feet. Below that, the vehicle takes 2d6 bludgeoning damage per minute from pressure.

The wheel allows natural turning as a movement action, in addition to either Edith or a humanoid pilot being able to use their standard action to operate up to two levers per round. The vehicle cannot perform more actions than this in a round even with multiple pilots. After each use, a lever goes back to its neutral position. Each lever functions as follows:

Apparatus of Kwalish m.2 Levers

Lever Up Down
1 Legs and tail extend, allowing the apparatus to walk and  swim. Legs and tail retract, reducing the apparatus's speed to 0 and making it unable to benefit from bonuses to speed.
2 All window shutters open (allowing visibility). All window shutters close.
3 All windows open (vehicle is no longer air tight). All windows close (vehicle is air tight).
4 Two claws extend from the front sides of the apparatus. The claws retract.
5 Each extended claw makes the following melee weapon attack: +8 to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: 7 (2d6) bludgeoning damage. Each extended claw makes the following melee weapon attack: +8 to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: The target is grappled (escape DC 15).
6 The apparatus walks, swims, or climbs forward. The apparatus walks or swims backward.
7 Eyelike fixtures emit bright light in a 30-foot radius and dim light for an additional 30 feet. The light turns off.
8 The apparatus sinks as much as 30 feet in liquid. The apparatus rises up to 30 feet in liquid.
9 The rear hatch unseals and opens. The rear hatch closes and seals.
