Wondrous Item, uncommon

An odd arrow resembling a quill of a scribe.

This arrow contains a single charge of a (slightly modified) sending spell. The charge resets each dawn.

Pieces of parchment or light objects (not exceeding 0.5 lbs in total) can be attached to the base of the arrow. When fired from any bow using a charge of sending, the arrow is transported and lands at the feet of a recipient you are familiar with. A thin semi-transparent white string extends from the senders bow when fired, extending about 5 feet in the general direction of the target before disappearing. This string can also be seen by the recipient extending from the end of the arrow back towards the general direction of the sender.
The recipient may attach their own response to the arrow and tug the sending string from their side to notify the sender that the arrow is ready to be returned. The sender may pull the sending string at any time to return the arrow to their location.

Side Notes:

  • You can send the arrow across any distance and even to other planes of existence, but if the target is on a different plane than you, there is a 5 percent chance that the message doesn't arrive.
  • Moving with the bow the arrow was fired with does not create tension on the sending string. Only when the string is intentionally grasped and pulled upon does the arrow return.
  • As long as a charge of sending is in use, the arrow can only be returned to the one who initiated the sending spell.
  • Also functions as a normal arrow if needed, but can be pulled back into your hand as a bonus action via the string. Removal from a target will cause an extra 1d4 + DEX modifier DMG. (This does not require a sending charge)
  • If the recipient cannot receive the message (because of death or otherwise) the string turns red, and the arrow automatically returns to the sender. (Charge is still expended)
