This Ancient Ritual Scroll is an aged and delicate piece of parchment covered in intricate symbols and diagrams. When deciphered and activated, it conjures an ancient form of protective magic, used by vigilant guardians in ages past. Unlike a typical spell scroll, this ritual focuses on prolonged effects and requires careful preparation to perform.

The Eye of Alarm ritual conjures forth one or more phantasmal sentries: floating eyes set atop invisible, ethereal pillars. These sentries remain watchful over a designated area, scanning for potential threats and alerting the caster to danger. The ancient nature of this ritual means it has stood the test of time as a reliable protective measure for those in vulnerable situations, such as during rest or while safeguarding a location.
-
Eyes Created:
Your Arcana check determines how many eyes you can place and what sensory capabilities they possess.Arcana Check Result Eyes Created Vision or Ability 19 or lower One Normal vision 20–39 Three Darkvision 40 or higher Five Darkvision and tremorsense (within 12 squares) -
Placement and Stealth:
You may place each eye in any square within 10 squares of where the ritual is performed. Each eye has a Stealth check result of 20 + your level to avoid detection. -
Senses and Detection:
Each eye uses your Perception modifier with a +5 bonus. The eyes do not hear but have keen visual senses based on the Arcana check result. -
Alert Mechanism:
When an eye spots an intruder, it emits a loud warning sound, which you define during the ritual. The sound can range from a voice announcing "Enemies approach!" to an animal's cry or even musical notes. The Perception DC to hear the alert is 0, modified by distance as usual. -
Intruder Designation:
You are never considered an intruder by your own eyes. During the ritual, you may designate other creatures (participants in the ritual) as non-intruders, as well as define categories of creatures to be ignored (e.g., by race, creature type, or physical characteristics like armor or weaponry). -
Movement Limitation:
The ritual's effects end if you move more than 20 squares away from all the eyes.
Optional Focus:
To extend the duration indefinitely, you can use a jeweled focus—a small, silver-and-ruby eye worth 100 gp. As long as the focus remains within 20 squares of any of the eyes, the effects of the ritual continue until the focus is removed or destroyed. You may hide or protect the focus as needed.
