Wondrous Item, unknown rarity

When a resurrection is badly botched but doesn't downright fail, a piece of the recipient's soul will chip off. This item helps to track the effects that this can have on a character.

From a roleplay perspective, a sufferer of this illness is inflicted with intense fatigue at all times. This may rise or lower, but will always be present. Additionally, the resurrection can lead to muscle weakness- primarily manifesting through spasms or shaking, as well as difficulty standing and running- and a decline in higher processing skills. A sufferer of advanced resurrection sickness will often require regular healing sessions through specialized clerics or physicians, a restructuring of their living conditions and day-to-day activity to support the damage, and often use of mobility aids such as wheelchairs, canes or crutches.

Mechanically, advanced resurrection sickness causes a variety of drawbacks for the sufferer:

  • A permanent -5 to the sufferer's Strength, Dexterity, and Constitution stats, to a minimum of 3.
  • A permanent -10 feet to all movement speeds. If the sufferer moves further than 50 feet on their turn using movement speed, they must make a DC 15 Dexterity saving throw or fall prone. This effect is negated if the sufferer is using a mobility aid such as a cane or crutch.
  • -3 to AC when not wearing armor.
  • The sufferer's HP total is halved from what it was when they first contracted the illness, and the sufferer is not allowed to recover health by expending Hit Dice over a short rest.
  • The sufferer's maximum carrying capacity is halved.

Notes: Bonus: Dexterity Score, Bonus: Constitution Score, Bonus: Strength Score, Bonus: Speed
