Ring, uncommon (requires attunement)
While wearing this ring, you are immune to magic that allows other creatures to read your thoughts, determine whether you are lying, know your alignment, or know your creature type. Creatures can telepathically communicate with you only if you allow it.
You can take a Magic action to cause the ring to become imperceptible until you take another Magic action to make it perceptible, until you remove the ring, or until you die.
If you die while wearing the ring, your soul enters it, unless it already houses a soul. You can remain in the ring or depart for the afterlife. As long as your soul is in the ring, you can telepathically communicate with any creature wearing it. A wearer can’t prevent this telepathic communication.
So what does this actually, mechanically, do to a Deception check? Automatic pass? I like having special things happen on 1s and 20s regardless of what the roll is for, and this seems to completely trivialize that for Deception.
this probably wouldn't affect deception roles, since only magic related to detecting lies is affected by the ring.
But if that's the case (and I agree that's how it reads) then it's almost useless; the only reason to attune to it would be for a second chance for your soul. Which would be a crazy story hook, but still.
It protects against zone of truth, so there's that.
my favorite use was to give it to a vampire who wanted to keep his undeath a secret
That's good. It seems NPCish. I can imagine the scenario where a PC is in the inner circle of a failed prison riot against illithids, and this is slipped to them before their interrogation sessions so they don't squeal; but even though that's a perfect scenario for the ring it just seems a bit too deus ex machina.
As soon as the changeling comes back in the 2024 version, this ring will be worth its gold several times over. The changeling's transformation is a physical and not a magical ability, so it cannot be detected or resolved with magic. With the ring in conjunction with high deception, Performance and persuasion values (Bard/Rouge Expertise), basically only true sight can see through the masquerade.
you can act as a king and no one would know you're a fake! Until opponents come who have true sight, you are the ultimate character actor.
Wouldn’t they know you’re hiding something when their spell doesn’t work? Would they know you have a ring of mind shielding?
There are many reasons the spell may fail - pretty much all of them require a save. They would not know you are lying, they would simply know that they cannot use their magical means to be sure.
I am fond of this item for certain characters. It helps with having an air of arrogance, knowing that your mind cannot be intruded upon. It is great against nothics, for example.
People who say this is useless need more villains that can detect thoughts lol
Also the story hook if there's already someone inside the ring! And now the party can either chose to help the trapped soul or not... And whether or not the one trapped is a villain or genuinely helpful. This item is super interesting!
