The Astral Heartstone is a legendary, radiant crystal of immense cosmic power, said to be the heart of a fallen star that once burned brightly at the center of the universe. It pulses with an ethereal glow, shifting between hues of radiant gold and deep purple, reflecting the very fabric of space and time. The stone radiates an almost overwhelming presence, a mix of creation and destruction, as if it holds the potential to shape worlds—or destroy them.
When you attune to the Astral Heartstone, you connect your essence to the vast, infinite energy of the cosmos. The Heartstone amplifies your sorcerous powers, grants mastery over the stars themselves, and connects you to the very forces of the universe.
Properties of the Astral Heartstone
1. Celestial Power Unleashed
The Astral Heartstone greatly enhances your sorcerous abilities. While attuned to it, you gain the following benefits:
- Spellcasting Ability: Your Charisma modifier increases by +2, up to a maximum of 24.
- Sorcery Points: You gain an additional 2 sorcery points per short or long rest.
- Cosmic Infusion: When you cast a spell of 1st level or higher that deals force, radiant, or psychic damage, you may choose to deal an additional 2d6 damage of that type. You can use this feature a number of times equal to your Charisma modifier (minimum of once), regaining expended uses after a long rest.
- Stellar Reflex: You can use your reaction to reduce the damage of any attack that deals force, radiant, or psychic damage by half. You can use this feature a number of times per long rest equal to your proficiency bonus.
2. Starforged Resilience
The cosmic energy flowing through the Heartstone grants you extraordinary resilience against the forces of the universe.
- Astral Shield: As a bonus action, you can expend 3 sorcery points to create an astral shield that grants you temporary hit points equal to twice your sorcerer level + your Charisma modifier. The shield lasts for 1 minute or until depleted.
- Cosmic Ward: You have resistance to force, radiant, and psychic damage.
3. Astral Convergence (Reunite the Shards)
The Astral Heartstone is incomplete. It is a part of a greater whole, a shattered artifact whose full power has yet to be realized. Over time, you may unlock more of its cosmic potential.
- Shard of the Cosmos: As part of your attunement, you gain the Celestial Shard of the Verdant Cosmos (or any other shard you acquire from this artifact’s quest line). Each shard you reunite with the Heartstone unlocks additional powers, including new spells, enhanced damage, or control over more cosmic phenomena.
- Astral Summoning (Once per Long Rest): When you attune to the full Astral Heartstone (with at least two shards united), you can cast Summon Celestial at 5th level without expending a spell slot. The celestial summoned takes the form of a starry avatar, granting you advantage on all Charisma-based skill checks while it is present. This ability can be used once per long rest.
4. Cosmic Manifestation
The Heartstone grants you the ability to draw power from the stars themselves.
- Cosmic Destruction: Once per long rest, you can cast Meteor Swarm without expending a spell slot. When you cast it in this way, the meteors are surrounded by radiant, starry light, and they deal an additional 3d6 radiant damage.
- Astral Form: As an action, you can expend 6 sorcery points to temporarily transform into an avatar of the cosmos for 1 minute. During this time, you gain the following benefits:
- You can fly at a speed of 60 feet.
- You can cast Wish once without expending a spell slot (though the effects are limited to altering cosmic phenomena or manipulating space-time).
- All spells you cast deal an additional 2d6 force damage.
- You are immune to force, radiant, and psychic damage.
5. The Cosmic Eye
Once you have reunited the full Astral Heartstone, you unlock the ability to peer into the infinite vastness of the cosmos. As an action, you can open your eyes to the stars and see visions of the universe’s future and past. This ability allows you to gain one of the following benefits:
- Astral Sight: You can cast True Seeing at will, without expending a spell slot.
- Fateweaver’s Insight: You can reroll any attack roll, saving throw, or ability check once per long rest. You must take the second roll.
- Cosmic Knowledge: You can cast Commune with the Cosmos once per day without expending a spell slot. This spell allows you to ask the universe up to three yes/no questions that are related to cosmic events, celestial bodies, or future occurrences.
Reuniting the Heartstone
The Astral Heartstone is not just an artifact—it's a quest. The Heartstone shattered into many pieces, scattered across the planes and lost to time. Each fragment is imbued with different cosmic powers, and each piece is rumored to be in the possession of powerful beings, secret cults, or hidden within ancient ruins.
To unlock the full potential of the Astral Heartstone, you must seek out and reunite its shards. With each shard returned to the Heartstone, new powers are unlocked, but so too are new challenges. The final completion of the Heartstone will grant the wielder the ability to reshape the cosmos—if they can harness its raw power without succumbing to madness or destruction.
History:
The Astral Heartstone was created by an ancient order of sorcerers known as the Starforged Conclave—a group that believed the power to manipulate the cosmos and space-time itself was the ultimate form of magic. Their ambition led them to forge the Heartstone by binding a primordial star's essence into the Heartstone, creating a source of limitless power. However, their lust for control over the universe led to their downfall when rival sorcerers shattered the Heartstone in a battle for dominance. Now, the Heartstone lies broken, its pieces scattered across the planes, and its full power waiting to be claimed by those brave—or foolish—enough to seek its might. The Heartstone is said to be the key to ultimate cosmic control, but only a sorcerer who understands both the beauty and danger of the universe will be able to wield its true power.
