Wondrous Item, varies (requires attunement)
At first glance, this device looks like an ordinary light crossbow; however, it does not have a bow string and in the body of the crossbow is a compartment that can fit a spell scroll. You may cast spells with a casting time of one action or one bonus action using this crossbow by placing them into the compartment and pulling the trigger. As part of the action or bonus action to activate the crossbow you may retrieve the scroll from your person.
There is an additional cost to be paid which replaces the normal restrictions about casting from scrolls:
- If the spell is on your spell list and of a level you can cast, there is no additional cost.
- If the spell is on your spell list and a higher level than you can cast, you take psychic damage equal to half the spell's level (round up), reduced by your proficiency bonus.
- If the spell is not on your spell list or you cannot normally cast spells, you take psychic damage equal to the spell's level (no damage for cantrips), reduced by your proficiency bonus.
Four types of Caster Crossbows are known to exist:
d100 | Bow Type | Maximum Scroll Level |
Minimum Save DC |
Minimum Spell Attack |
---|---|---|---|---|
01-40 | Yew (Uncommon) | 6th | - | - |
41-75 | Darkwood (Rare) | 7th | 15 | +7 |
76-90 | Bronzewood (Very Rare) | 8th | 17 | +9 |
91-100 | Mithral (Legendary) | 9th | 19 | +11 |
If the scroll has a save DC or spell attack value less than that from the table, use the value from the table instead.
