Weapon (longsword), artifact (requires attunement by a long rest)

The Ancient Runic Flame Blade is a weapon of devastating power and eternal flame, forged in the molten heart of an ancient volcano by a forgotten civilization. The blade gleams with intricate, glowing runes, pulsating like embers in the forge. Its edge is perpetually alight with searing flames, casting flickering light and sparks with every movement. This legendary weapon is both feared and coveted, as its wielder wields the essence of primordial fire itself.

Properties and Abilities

  1. Runic Burst (Recharge 5-6):
As an action, the wielder can release the energy stored in the blade’s runes, unleashing a fiery explosion in a 20-foot radius centered on themselves. All creatures in this area must make a Dexterity saving throw (DC 18).
    • On a failed save, creatures take 6d10 fire damage and are pushed 10 feet away from the wielder.
    • On a successful save, creatures take half damage and are not pushed.
  2. Eternal Flame:
The blade’s flames cannot be extinguished by non-magical means. While attuned, the wielder gains the following benefits:
    • Resistance to fire damage.
    • The ability to cast the Control Flames cantrip at will.
    • Immunity to environmental effects of extreme heat.
  3. Searing Smite:
The wielder can cast the spell Searing Smite at 5th level without expending a spell slot. Once used, this ability cannot be used again until the wielder finishes a short or long rest.
  4. Infernal Wrath (1/Day):
As an action, the wielder can activate the blade's most destructive power, channeling a firestorm in a 60-foot radius sphere centered on a point they can see within 100 feet. Each creature in the area must make a Dexterity saving throw (DC 18) or take 12d10 fire damage and fall prone. Structures in the area take maximum damage.
    This ability recharges at dawn.
  5. Runic Knowledge:
The Ancient Runic Flame Blade imparts ancient knowledge to its wielder. While attuned, the wielder gains proficiency in Arcana and can read, write, and speak Primordial.

History

Forged eons ago by the Flameborn, a race of fire-wielding titans who ruled in the Age of Elemental Chaos, the Ancient Runic Flame Blade was their masterpiece. The weapon was created as a symbol of dominion and a tool to conquer realms. Its runes are believed to hold fragments of the Primordial Flame, the source of all fire in the multiverse.

When the Flameborn were overthrown, the blade was lost to history, whispered about in legends and recovered only in dire times. Scholars believe it has appeared at pivotal moments in history, wielded by both heroes and villains to reshape the fate of nations. It now lies dormant, awaiting a wielder strong enough to command its blazing power and withstand the curse of the inferno.

The Ancient Runic Flame Blade burns with ambition, as if it has a will of its own. It whispers to its wielder, promising unimaginable power at a steep cost. Will its bearer rise as a savior, or succumb to the blade’s fiery thirst for destruction?
