Armor (breastplate), legendary (requires attunement by a a Rogue, Warlock, or Fighter)

The Armor of Darkness is a masterfully crafted breastplate forged from shadow-touched metal. Intricate patterns of curling tendrils and blooming thorns etch its surface, glowing faintly with a dark, silvery light. The armor appears almost alive, its metallic sheen rippling as though in response to the presence of nearby shadows. This legendary piece of armor is a coveted relic among those who walk the line between light and dark, granting unparalleled stealth, resilience, and dominion over shadows.

The armor was forged in the Shadowfell by an ancient order of assassins who swore allegiance to the enigmatic deity of shadows, pledging their lives to protect its mysteries. Its creation is steeped in rituals that bind the essence of darkness into the metal itself.

Properties and Abilities

  1. Shadowmeld:
The wearer can blend seamlessly into the shadows. While in dim light or darkness, the wearer is invisible to creatures that rely on darkvision to see them.
  2. Aura of Dread:
The armor exudes an intimidating presence. Creatures of the wearer's choice within 15 feet must succeed on a Wisdom saving throw (DC 16) or become frightened for 1 minute. A frightened creature can repeat the saving throw at the end of each of its turns, ending the effect on a success. This ability can be used 3 times per long rest.
  3. Dark Step (Recharge 5–6):
As a bonus action, the wearer can teleport up to 60 feet to a space they can see within dim light or darkness. After teleporting, they gain advantage on their next attack roll or impose disadvantage on the next attack roll made against them before the end of their next turn.
  4. Veil of Shadows:
Once per long rest, the wearer can invoke the armor's power to create an area of magical darkness in a 30-foot radius centered on themselves. The darkness lasts for 10 minutes and moves with the wearer. Creatures with darkvision cannot see through this darkness, and nonmagical light cannot illuminate it. The wearer can see normally in this darkness.
  5. Sentinel of the Void:
While attuned to the Armor of Darkness, the wearer gains resistance to necrotic damage and psychic damage.
  6. Unyielding Resolve:
When reduced to 0 hit points but not killed outright, the wearer can drop to 1 hit point instead. When this happens, they are surrounded by a swirling shield of shadows for 1 minute. While the shield is active:
    • The wearer gains temporary hit points equal to 2d10 + their level.
    • Enemies within 10 feet take 2d6 necrotic damage at the start of their turn.

This ability can be used once per long rest.

History

The Armor of Darkness was forged during the Age of Shadows, a time when the borders between the Material Plane and the Shadowfell were thin. The legendary armor was crafted by the Shrouded Blades, an elite sect of assassins who worshipped the Shadowlord, an enigmatic figure who granted them power over the darkness itself.

This armor consists of a fitted metal chest piece worn with supple leather. Although it leaves the legs and arms relatively unprotected, this armor provides good protection for the wearer's vital organs while leaving the wearer relatively unencumbered.
