A faint, soothing hum emanates from the amulet, resonating with the protective magic imbued within it.
Properties
The Amulet of Dire Protection possesses the following properties, activated only in the most perilous circumstances when the wearer or those they love are at immediate risk of death or irreparable harm:
- Dire Shield
When the wearer or an ally within 30 feet would take damage that would reduce them to 0 hit points, the amulet activates automatically: - All creatures of the wearer’s choice within a 30-foot radius are enveloped in a shimmering barrier. The barrier grants temporary hit points equal to 5d10 + the wearer’s level and resistance to all damage for 1 minute.
- All hostile creatures in the area must succeed on a DC 18 Wisdom saving throw or become stunned for 1 round.
- Astral Sanctuary
If the danger persists, the amulet may trigger a secondary effect: - The wearer and up to five creatures of their choice within 10 feet are instantly transported to the Astral Plane or another safe location of the DM’s choice. This effect only occurs if staying in the current location would certainly result in death or capture.
- Ethereal Guidance
Once per long rest, the amulet can grant the wearer a moment of insight. When activated, the wearer can ask the amulet for guidance, receiving cryptic but useful knowledge of the immediate future or assistance in solving a critical problem. This functions as the Divination spell but requires no material components.
Curse of Responsibility
The Amulet of Dire Protection is not without its burdens. Each time it activates, the wearer must succeed on a DC 18 Wisdom saving throw or take 2 levels of exhaustion as the strain of its magic weighs heavily on their soul. The amulet also bonds deeply to the wearer’s emotions, responding primarily to their love and connection to others. If the wearer loses their belief in protecting others or acts selfishly, the amulet will grow dormant and refuse to activate.
