Astral Galley of the Cosmic Chef (Spelljammer)

The Astral Galley of the Cosmic Chef is a magically enhanced kitchen housed within a spelljammer ship, designed for preparing meals amidst the wonders and dangers of the Astral Sea and other planes. This kitchen transcends ordinary culinary needs, blending high magic with everyday cooking, enabling its user to craft exquisite meals with materials from any world or plane, regardless of scarcity or environment. The galley is equipped with floating, self-cleaning utensils, enchanted cooking implements, and magically prepared ingredients that can be summoned at will. No matter the destination, this galley ensures that those aboard the ship will always have a warm meal at their disposal.

This enchanted kitchen can be summoned into the ship's galley at will, and once attuned, it becomes an integral part of the vessel's cooking operations. It’s a perfect blend of practical magic and culinary art, turning every meal into a banquet fit for royalty.

Properties:

• Endless Pantry: The Astral Galley provides an endless supply of basic ingredients (flour, spices, fruits, vegetables, meats, and more) drawn from a pocket dimension tied to the multiverse. As long as you have access to the kitchen, you can summon any mundane ingredients needed for cooking without limit. These ingredients are always fresh, never spoil, and can be altered by the chef's will (e.g., the meat of a cow can be transformed into that of a different animal). Additionally, rare or exotic ingredients (such as planar fruits or astral fish) can be sourced from across the planes with a 1-hour ritual that involves communing with the galley. These exotic ingredients will be summoned upon request and are treated as if they were always available, with no spoilage or risk of decay.

• Self-Cleaning Equipment: The kitchen’s magical implements, such as knives, pots, pans, cutting boards, and stoves, are enchanted to clean themselves after each use. Once a meal has been prepared and eaten, all cooking implements, utensils, and surfaces will be instantly cleaned, polished, and sanitized. The galley’s self-repairing features ensure that any broken or damaged item is restored to full working order in 1d4 hours.

• Multi-Plane Cooker: The Astral Galley can adapt to the unique environments of any plane or space. While aboard the ship, the galley can shift its features to accommodate different cooking styles and methods. In the Elemental Plane of Fire, the stove becomes a living flame that can cook food in seconds. On the Elemental Plane of Water, the galley conjures underwater ovens that function with steam and pressure to cook seafood and other delicacies. The kitchen’s adaptability makes it perfect for preparing any meal, no matter the environment.

• Recipe Book of the Infinite Stars: The Astral Galley contains a magical recipe book that evolves based on the attuned cook’s skill. This recipe book contains cooking instructions from across the planes, from the delicacies of the Feywild to the exotic dishes of the Nine Hells. The recipe book updates every time a new dish is prepared, adding new recipes to its pages based on the ingredients used and the cook’s creativity. It can be used to create magical meals, which provide temporary benefits:

  • Galactic Feast: A meal that grants temporary hit points equal to the chef’s proficiency bonus + the number of guests at the table. The meal also restores a 1st-level spell slot to the chef.
  • Astral Elixir: A drink that enhances mental acuity, granting the drinker advantage on Intelligence checks for the next 1 hour.
  • Ethereal Pie: A dish that grants the eater the ability to cast Misty Step once, as a bonus action, within the next 24 hours.

• Planar Stove: The Astral Galley’s stove can create a variety of magical flames capable of cooking anything, even across the planes. The stove itself can manifest as a portal to an elemental plane, allowing for the creation of unique cooking effects:

  • In the Plane of Fire, the stove becomes a blazing furnace that instantly cooks food to perfection, even searing meats in seconds.
  • In the Feywild, the stove takes on a playful, mischievous nature, changing ingredients into whimsically bizarre dishes that enhance the eater’s charisma and luck for a short time.
  • In the Astral Sea, the stove creates ethereal light, perfectly preserving the freshness of foods and allowing for meals with no need for refrigeration.

• The Gourmet’s Touch: The Astral Galley grants its attuned cook the ability to craft gourmet meals that can boost the morale of the ship’s crew. As an action, the cook can prepare a meal that affects the entire crew, granting the following benefits for 8 hours:

  • Advantage on saving throws against fear and charm effects.
  • Temporary hit points equal to the cook’s proficiency bonus.
  • Increase in physical performance: The crew gains a +1 bonus to Strength and Dexterity checks for the next 8 hours.

• Nourishment of the Void: When preparing meals, the Astral Galley can create food that provides sustenance in the void of space. Anyone who eats the meals prepared by this galley can survive in the vacuum of space for up to 1 hour without needing a spacesuit or oxygen supply. The food can sustain the consumer with all necessary nutrients and hydration. This effect is temporary and cannot extend beyond 1 hour without additional sustenance.

• Cosmic Culinary Influence: As the ship's cook grows more attuned to the Astral Galley, they gain an increasing ability to influence the minds and spirits of others with their food. With a successful DC 15 Wisdom (Insight) check, the cook can imbue their meals with emotional or magical effects. The cook can:

  • Create a meal of celebration, lifting the spirits of the crew and granting them advantage on Charisma checks for the next 24 hours.
  • Prepare a comforting meal that calms tensions, allowing the crew to regain 1d4 + 1 hit dice when they take a short rest within 1 hour after eating.
  • Cook a mood-altering dish, subtly shifting a person’s attitude from hostile to friendly (or the reverse), lasting for 1 hour.

• Guardian of the Galley (Optional): The Astral Galley can conjure a sentient, magical cooking assistant when needed. This spectral assistant appears as a floating celestial chef or fey kitchen helper, capable of aiding the cook with preparing meals, cleaning up, and maintaining the galley. The assistant is not sentient in the same way a humanoid would be, but it can respond to basic commands, move around the kitchen, and assist with both mundane tasks (like stirring a pot) and magical culinary needs (like maintaining the perfect cooking temperature). The assistant can even assist with spells like Prestidigitation or Purify Food and Drink, ensuring that the crew’s meals are always fresh and prepared with care.

The Astral Galley of the Cosmic Chef was crafted by an ancient order of astral chefs who traveled the planes, bringing the art of cooking to every corner of existence. These chefs were more than simple cooks—they were masters of transforming magic and ingredients from different realms into extraordinary meals that could heal wounds, enhance abilities, and even sway the hearts of others.

Legend tells that the first Astral Galley was given as a gift to the first spelljammer captain, who wanted to feed a crew of diverse races and magical beings on long voyages across the Astral Sea. With its creation, the crew’s morale was kept high, their health was preserved, and their adventures in the farthest reaches of the multiverse became much more manageable.

Over the centuries, the Astral Galley has passed from captain to captain, always ensuring that those aboard a ship are well-fed, healthy, and ready for whatever the stars throw at them.

The Astral Galley of the Cosmic Chef is the perfect tool for any spelljammer captain, chef, or adventurer who values the art of cooking and the power of well-prepared meals. Whether creating magical feasts or preparing for a journey through dangerous realms, this kitchen ensures that the crew stays well-fed, healthy, and ready for the challenges ahead.
