Weapon (greataxe), rare (requires attunement by a requires attunement by a barbarian)

This +1 greataxe is a gift from Ares, the god of war. The weapon constantly drips with deep crimson blood, though the blood vanishes before touching anything. The axe exudes an aura of carnage, instilling fear in enemies and empowering the wielder to unleash devastating effects.

Properties

  • Magic Weapon: You gain a +1 bonus to attack and damage rolls made with this magic weapon.
  • Bloodletting: The greataxe’s unnerving appearance grants you a +1 bonus on any Intimidation checks that involve displaying or using the axe.
  • Flames of War: While raging, the damage type of Ares’ Fury changes to fire damage, as the axe ignites with the flames of war.

Special Abilities

  1. Critical Fear
When you score a critical hit with Ares’ Fury, all hostile creatures within 10 feet of the target must make a Wisdom saving throw (DC = 8 + your Strength modifier + your proficiency bonus). On a failed save, a creature becomes frightened of you until the end of its next turn.

A frightened creature can repeat the saving throw at the end of each of its turns, ending the effect on a success. If a creature fails this saving throw 5 times while frightened in this way, it becomes permanently frightened of you until cured by greater restoration or similar magic.

  2. Mark of Doom
Once per rage, when you hit a creature with Ares’ Fury, you can choose to mark it with the Mark of Doom (no action required). The mark manifests as a deep, bloody gash on the creature’s chest. At the start of its next turn, the marked creature takes 1d8 necrotic damage.

  3. Lashing Doom
If the necrotic damage from Mark of Doom reduces a creature to 0 hit points, spectral chains erupt from the creature’s body, lashing out at all hostile creatures within 10 feet. Each creature in range must make a Dexterity saving throw (DC = 8 + your Strength modifier + your proficiency bonus). On a failed save, a creature becomes marked with Mark of Doom.

This effect can chain, allowing the newly marked creatures to trigger additional eruptions if they are reduced to 0 hit points by Mark of Doom.

Proficiency with a Greataxe allows you to add your proficiency bonus to the attack roll for any attack you make with it.

This weapon has the following mastery property. To use this property, you must have a feature that lets you use it.

Cleave. If you hit a creature with a melee attack roll using this weapon, you can make a melee attack roll with the weapon against a second creature within 5 feet of the first that is also within your reach. On a hit, the second creature takes the weapon’s damage, but don’t add your ability modifier to that damage unless that modifier is negative. You can make this extra attack only once per turn.
