Arcane Compass

This 0.5 inch thick, 3 inch diameter plate looks like simple polished slate when inert. A strange pattern runs around it's border, beginning and end being a single small red gem. The flat sides of the plate are smooth.

A red, faintly glowing dot appears on either flat side, if the determined target is within 5 miles of the compass. The dot points at the location of the target as accurately as possible.
If the target is out of reach, the gem on the side faintly glows instead.

One hour of concentrated focus on the stone, uttering the mantra engraved, lets you change the target. This time can be cut short by casting a "Locate" Spell of the target appropriate category using the compass for a focus. The Arcane Compass cannot detect people protected against such divinations.
Dispel Magic cast on the Arcane Compass erases the target.
