Once upon a time, a great archdevil threatened Asmodeus. After a long battle, Asmodeus reigned victorious. Or so they all thought. Unknown to all, Asmodeus actually lost the battle, but managed to trap his foe in a ring. That same ring now stands before you.
The archdevil's spirit rages within the ring, but it can still enter contracts. Any creature that attunes to the ring is always in communication with the archdevil through telepathy. The archdevil may decide to grant the creature small boons for free, like the answers to a few questions, to gain the creature's trust. However, it's final goal is the weilder's soul. Once it believes it has gained the weilder's trust, it will try to enter a contract with them.
Whenever it thinks it has the weilder's trust, it can force the weilder to make a DC22 Wis saving throw. If the DM decides it does have the creature's trust, give the creature disadvantage. On a fail, the weilder enters the contract immediately. On a success, the ring tells the weilder the contract it wants the creature to agree to. Even on a success, the weilder can still decide to enter the contract. The terms of the contract are up to the DM, but it likely involves granting the weilder power in return for service.
Destroying the Ring. The ring is powerfully enchanted by Asmodeus himself. All attempts to destroy the ring fail. The only way is to convince Asmodeus to lift the enchantment. Doing so renders the ring nonmagical, and releases the archdevil. All other attempts fail, including using wish or antimagic field.
If the archdevil is freed, it sets out to destroy Asmodeus, and succeeds. Doing so brings a major change to the devil's tactics. The new archdevil could be more or less successful than Asmodeus. It also might decide to destroy the weilder of they were not too nice.
