Crafted from pure Adamantine and imbued with ancient, near-divine craftsmanship, this shield defies conventional use. It levitates in front of its wielder, requiring no hands to hold it, adjusting its position instinctively to intercept blows. However, its magic is deeply tied to the purity of defense, rejecting any who would seek to bolster themselves further with armor.
Properties:
- Unyielding Defense: While attuned to this shield, your AC is set to 30.
- Sentient Protection: The Aegis grants disadvantage to all attack rolls against you as it moves to intercept incoming strikes.
- Unburdened Form: This shield cannot be used if the wielder is wearing any armor, including magical armor or shields. Clothing and non-armor magical items (such as cloaks or rings) do not interfere with its function.
Curse – The Smith’s Price:
The Aegis of the Unburdened is not merely an object but a testament to craftsmanship beyond mortal means. When attuned, the wielder becomes cursed, their soul forever marked by the Blacksmith’s Forge. The next time the attuned wielder dies, their body, soul, and all non-artifact possessions are immediately consumed by flames and reduced to a fine black ash—leaving nothing behind to resurrect or reclaim. Only a Wish spell or divine intervention can bypass this fate.
In addition, while attuned, the wielder finds all mundane metal weapons and armor refuse to stay in their physical grasp for long—rusting, shattering, or warping beyond use after 1d4 long rests in their possession, unless they are magical.
Attunement Requirement:
To attune to this shield, it must be personally forged, reforged, or reworked by a blacksmith of legendary skill. This process takes a forge of exceptional quality, a pure diamond forging hammer, and materials worth no less than 500,000 gp in Adamantine and rare components.
Shields require the Utilize action to Don or Doff. You gain the Armor Class benefit of a Shield only if you have training with it.
