Hoar’s voice was measured, steady, as though he spoke not just to these souls, but to every grievance ever sworn in the heat of betrayal.
"Your names are lost to history. Your killers remain unpunished. The world has moved on, but your suffering lingers, clinging to the fabric of existence. I offer you a choice."
The souls stopped. Some turned toward him, hesitant, as if unsure whether to hope or despair.
"You may remain as you are, waiting for justice that may never come."
His eyes gleamed, the silver sheen of stormlight reflecting within them.
"Or you may become something more. Not just names whispered in regret. Not just ghosts that haunt forgotten places. I offer you weight. I offer you power. I offer you the chance to never be ignored again."
A ripple passed through the gathered spirits. The weight of his words settled over them like a final, undeniable truth.
Some backed away, shaking their heads, fading into the mist. They could not bear to become anything but what they were.
But others? Others stepped forward.
The betrayed lover, whose murderer sat on a throne of stolen power.
The warrior, abandoned on the battlefield by comrades who swore loyalty.
The child, slain by those meant to protect.
The sworn protector, who died failing the one they were meant to save. One by one, they knelt before Hoar, placing their hands upon the earth of this unclaimed realm. They did not need to speak; their agreement was already written in the marrow of their souls.
Hoar raised his hand, and from the ground, their forms began to dissolve, not into nothingness, but into something denser, something permanent. Their very essence compressed, hardened, reforged, their grief and hatred becoming a new substance.
Avenger’s Ashes.
Each speck was a promise never fulfilled, a scream never heard, a wound that never closed. So heavy with meaning, not even the fiercest storm could move it.
Hoar stood before the unmoving pile of Avenger’s Ashes; the final remains of those who had chosen to become something more than forgotten grievances. The weight of their sorrow, their anger, their undying need for justice, settled upon the air like a storm waiting to break.
But grief alone was not enough.
To wield vengeance, a weapon must be unyielding. It must not bend, must not break, must not fail the one who carries it. And so, Hoar turned his hand skyward, and from the void, a second element answered his call, adamantine, the unbreakable metal, formed in the depths of the world, impervious to time, unrelenting against any force.
With a mere thought, Hoar brought the two together.
The moment the ashes met the adamantine, a soundless scream rippled through the air, a whisper of every oath unfulfilled, every promise betrayed, every last breath taken without justice.
And then, they merged.
The ashes did not scatter, did not settle, they sank into the metal, warping, darkening, seeping into every fiber of the adamantine until the steel itself seemed alive with crimson light.
It pulsed once, twice, thrice, as though remembering its purpose.
And then Hoar moved. His hands, weathered by the weight of judgment, shaped the metal, not as a blacksmith would, but as a force weaving fate into steel. With each motion, the weapon took form.
A slender red blade, humming with the weight of wrath.
A deep maroon guard and hilt, rich as dried blood, yet elegant, not crude.
A second, smaller blade, jutting from the base, sharp as betrayal, swift as a second strike meant to ensure the deed was done. When at last he was finished, Hoar lowered his hands.
Before him rested Avenger, the Twinblade.
A weapon of pure justice and merciless revenge.
It did not glow. It did not hum with celestial light, nor did it whisper of radiant purpose. Instead, it stood still, waiting, unshakable just as vengeance always waited for its time to come.
Hoar regarded the blade for a moment. Then, with a motion as silent as the passing of judgment, he turned, carrying it toward the world.
The blade was made. Now, it only needed a hand to wield it.
There are weapons made of steel, weapons of magic, and then there is Avenger, the Twinblade, a weapon of pure, condensed wrath. It was forged by Hoar, the God of Revenge and Poet of Justice from adamantine and Avenger’s Ashes, the remains of souls who died unavenged, their rage too great to fade. These ashes, so burdened with hatred, do not scatter, do not yield, they are bound together into a force stronger than any mortal material.
Avenger is not merely a weapon; it is a curse, a promise, a relentless force. It does not simply kill, it ensures that vengeance is absolute. Those who take up this twinblade do not do so lightly. To wield it is to carry the weight of every soul who died without justice and to know that the blade will not rest until that balance is restored.
Sentience: Avenger, the Twinblade is semi-sentient (Intelligence 16, Wisdom 18, Charisma 22) and speaks telepathically in harsh whispers. It understands Common and can communicate through emotions and visions.
Cursed Bond: Once attuned, Avenger cannot be un-attuned until its wielder has exacted their vengeance.
Avenger, the Twinblade deals slashing damage instead of bludgeoning damage
You have a +2 bonus to attack and damage rolls made with this magic weapon.
The wielder of Avenger, the Twinblade gains the following benefits:
- Advantage on attack rolls against creatures who have harmed them or someone they cared about in the past year.
- The blade ignores resistances to slashing damage and treats immunity as resistance instead.
- If an enemy kills an ally or an innocent within 60 feet, the wielder gains advantage on all attacks and saving throws against that creature for the next 24 hours.
Three time per day as a bonus action, the wielder can call upon the fury of the Avenger’s Ashes used to make Avenger, the Twinblade, gaining the following benefits for 1 minute:
- Attacks with Avenger deal an additional 4d12 slashing damage.
- When the wielder is reduced to 0 hit points, they remain standing and continue fighting until the ability ends.
- Attacks ignore damage reduction and temporary hit points.
Once the ability ends, the wielder suffers 1 level of exhaustion as the rage within them momentarily subsides.
Once per day if the wielder kills a creature that has wronged them, Avenger, the Twinblade consumes their soul, preventing resurrection by any means short of the Wish spell or divine intervention. The wielder may choose one of the following effects:
- Regain all hit points.
- Permanently increase their Strength, Dexterity, or Constitution by 1 (max 24).
- Remove one curse, disease, or affliction upon them not caused by Avenger, the Twinblade.
If the wielder shows mercy to a sworn enemy while attuned to Avenger, the blade will grow restless and heavier, imposing disadvantage on attacks until vengeance is taken.
Once per week by driving the twinblade into the ground, the wielder may call upon the souls of those absorbed by Avenger, the Twinblade and manifest them in a 60-foot radius.
- Enemies within range must make a DC 22 Wisdom saving throw or be paralyzed for 1 minute as spectral figures hold them in place.
- The wielder may ask the spirits one question, and they will answer honestly, whispering truths from beyond the grave.
If the wielder abandons their vengeance, the spirits will turn upon them instead.
Avenger does not forgive or forget. It is not simply a tool of revenge, it demands it.
- If vengeance is left unclaimed, the wielder suffers nightmares of the dead, their pleas for justice echoing endlessly. They gain no benefits from rest until they take at least one life in pursuit of vengeance.
- If the wielder breaks an oath of vengeance, Avenger rejects them, dealing 10d12 necrotic damage before vanishing to find another bearer.
Even if lost, Avenger never truly disappears, it simply waits, lingering in the world until it finds another soul consumed by the hunger for retribution.
Destroying Avenger, the Twinblade is nearly impossible, for hatred itself cannot be easily erased. However, there exist two known ways to unmake it:
- Bathe it in the Waters of Forgotten Grief. The blade must be submerged in the Lethean Wellspring, a hidden source of water said to exist beyond the reach of time. There, it will lose its memories, its purpose, and its very being, dissolving into nothingness.
- Let the Unavenged Rest. If the wielder tracks down every soul who contributed to the creation of Avenger’s Ashes and ensures that justice, not vengeance, is done, the blade will begin to crumble into dust. However, this path is near-impossible, for many of these souls are long lost, and the blade’s rage may turn against its wielder before they can complete their task
Proficiency with a Quarterstaff allows you to add your proficiency bonus to the attack roll for any attack you make with it.
