Buried in a long-forgotten chamber of Baldurs Gate's sewage system lies Auriel, an obsidian bow carved with faces of the damned, inlaid with shards of ruby, possessed by the last vestige of the soul of a fallen angel, with almost no memory of its past and only the urge to consume souls.
Auriel has the following magical properties:
Attunement
Auriel may choose to attune to any creature that touches it. It will only attune to good creatures, despite the fact that it is inhabited by the soul of a fallen angel and is therefore evil.
Arrows of Auriel
Auriel does not require ammunition. Upon making an Attack roll, an arrow of pure energy will manifest itself, dealing 1d8 damage, as detailed under Soul Parasite.
Soul Parasite
Devouring a soul empowers Auriel, slowly unlocking additional power over time as it devours more, as detailed below:
Vestigial Soul (Dormant)
- Auriel has the ability to use the Devour Soul property. Any attack rolls made against Celestials while attuned to this weapon are rolled with advantage, and in addition your attacks deal necrotic damage.
- While Vestigial and Hungering, Auriel will demand its wielder kill any Celestial creatures that come into contact with it. If its wielder refuses, they must make a DC 17 Charisma saving throw or be Charmed by Auriel into obeying the command.
Hungering Soul (Empowered)
- Auriel has the ability to use the Devour Soul property. In addition to Auriel's Dormant properties, you gain a +1 bonus to Attack and Damage rolls made with this weapon.
- Your attacks now deal fire damage.
- While Empowered, Auriel will resist attempts from its wielder to Attack or harm any Celestial creatures that are visible to it. if its wielder attempts to do so regardless of Auriel's warnings, Auriel attempts to make a Charisma saving throw with a DC of 12 + its wielders Charisma modifier. On a success Auriel will not function as a bow, and any Attack rolls will either miss, guided by Auriel's soul, or fail to create an arrow.
Devour Soul
Whenever Auriel is used to reduce a creature to 0 hit points, Auriel slays the creature and devours its soul unless it is a construct, undead, or otherwise does not have a soul over which it can claim ownership. While attuned, whenever you fail a death saving throw, you must make another death saving throw. If you fail both of these, Auriel devours your soul. A creature whose soul has been devoured by Auriel cannot be restored to life by anything other than Wish spell or until Auriel is broken, or Auriel themselves releases them. When Auriel devours a soul, it grants +1 on the next attack roll you make against any creature before the end of your next turn, in addition to any other bonuses provided by Auriel.
Hungering Soul (Empowered)
Auriel speaks with a questioning tone, and will attempt to guide you towards situations resulting in conflict to feed its desire for more souls, however it will no longer suggest killing every creature it sees. Auriel will refer to itself as a collective with its wielder.
Sentience
Auriel is a sentient Neutral Evil weapon with an Intelligence of 18, a Wisdom of 14, and a Charisma of 20. It has hearing out to a range of 120 feet and shares vision with the creature it is attuned to. While you are attuned to it, the weapon can speak, read, and understand every language you know, and can communicate with its wielder telepathically.
Personality
Auriel is the soul of a fallen angel who was defeated in battle, then trapped inside a bow made from obsidian. It is sustained from the souls of those it devours. Auriel's personality changes based on how many souls it has devoured.
Proficiency with a Longbow allows you to add your proficiency bonus to the attack roll for any attack you make with it.
This weapon has the following mastery property. To use this property, you must have a feature that lets you use it.
Slow. If you hit a creature with this weapon and deal damage to it, you can reduce its Speed by 10 feet until the start of your next turn. If the creature is hit more than once by weapons that have this property, the Speed reduction doesn’t exceed 10 feet.
Notes: Bonus: Magic, Replace Damage Type: Fire, creature of good alignment of the weapon's choice, Vestige of Divergence, Ammunition, Heavy, Range, Two-Handed, Slow
