This shield bears the symbol of Ilmater, the Crying God, and is imbued with divine power that rewards self-sacrifice. Each ability it grants requires the wielder to sacrifice their own vitality to protect and aid others. As the paladin grows, the shield’s power increases, reflecting their unwavering devotion to suffering in the place of others.
⸻
Base Properties (Level 1-4)
• This shield grants a +2 bonus to AC.
• Martyr’s Intervention: When an ally within 5 feet of you takes damage, you can use your reaction to take half of that damage yourself (ignoring resistance or immunity), reducing the damage they take by that amount.
⸻
Pain-forged Protector (Level 5-10)
• Endure the Burden: When you take damage from Martyr’s Intervention, you gain temporary hit points equal to half the damage taken.
• Suffering’s Boon: You can touch an ally and transfer any number of your hit points to them (as a bonus action), healing them for the amount lost. You can use this ability a number of times equal to your Charisma modifier per long rest.
⸻
Chains of the Martyr (Level 11-16)
• Shield of Agony: As a reaction, when an ally within 15 feet is hit by an attack, you can absorb the full damage in their place. You gain resistance to that damage type until the start of your next turn, but you suffer the vulnerable condition until then (all damage you take is doubled).
• Ilmater’s Embrace: If an ally within 30 feet would be reduced to 0 HP, you can transfer half of your current hit points to them, preventing them from falling unconscious and healing them for that amount. You suffer one level of exhaustion when using this ability.
⸻
Saint of Suffering (Level 17-20)
• Final Offering: When you are reduced to 0 HP, you can choose to remain standing for 1 additional round, ignoring death saves. During this time, you can act normally and gain resistance to all damage. At the end of your next turn, you immediately fall unconscious and begin making death saving throws. You can only use this ability once per long rest.
• Unbreakable Will: While you are below half your maximum hit points, you cannot be charmed, frightened, or paralyzed, and your allies within 10 feet gain resistance to radiant and necrotic damage.
Shields require the Utilize action to Don or Doff. You gain the Armor Class benefit of a Shield only if you have training with it.
