An Ioun stone is named after Ioun, a god of knowledge and prophecy revered on some worlds. Many types of Ioun stone exist, each type a distinct combination of shape and color.
When you use an action to toss one of these stones into the air, the stone orbits your head at a distance of 1d3 feet and confers a benefit to you. Thereafter, another creature must use an action to grasp or net the stone to separate it from you, either by making a successful attack roll against AC 24 or a successful DC 24 Dexterity (Acrobatics) check. You can use an action to seize and stow the stone, ending its effect.
A stone has AC 24, 10 hit points, and resistance to all damage. It is considered to be an object that is being worn while it orbits your head.
Mastery. Your proficiency bonus increases by 1 while this pale green prism orbits your head.
Notes: Bonus: Proficiency Bonus, Buff

Posted Jun 9, 2021This stone seems quite... underwhelming for a legendary. When I hear legendary, I expect something super fancy. A simple stat on a stick is boring! Not to mention it's destructible!

Posted Aug 9, 2021Yeah, a +5% is not to be underestimated but when you compare it to one of those books that gives you a +2 to a stat that are very rare (like the manual of quickness of action) it seems very lackluster.

Posted Aug 12, 2021Honestly, I think this is very good, effectively +1 to all proficient skills, saving throws, attacks, spell and ability saves. For rogues and bards especially.

Posted Aug 21, 2021I agree with Jupiter. Perhaps not as good as some legendary items but it is legendary indeed when you consider how few options casters have to buff their spell DC and attack mod.

Posted Dec 23, 2021With more subclasses and races depending on proficiency to determine things like number of uses per long rest, multipliers, and boosts for non skill related calculations, proficiency is going to become more beneficial overall.

Posted Jan 19, 2022As a general rule a character can only advance their proficiency 4 times across 20 levels. This item gives an across the board bump unlike anything else.

Posted Oct 31, 2023It's a shame this would be instantly destroyed by pretty much any AOE damage effect a level 11+ player character would come across

Posted Nov 20, 2023From the text: "It is considered to be an object that is being worn while it orbits your head." While meteor swarm damages ALL objects in the area (another reason that spell is overpowered), I'm pretty sure this would protect it from most AoEs.
Edit: that said, it's still really fragile.

Posted Feb 13, 2024Why can’t I search this item? If I put in Mastery, or try to filter items by “Bonus, Proficiency Bonus” I get errors.

Posted Jun 30, 2024Agreed. Prof bonus caps at +6. This is worth 16% of max prof bonus. And prof bonus averages to +1 every 3 levels. It's a great item. That said, I'd take it as minor, lesser and greater with +1, +2, and +3 bonuses.
