Halfling chaser for the win, if it is fun and does not unbalance stuff then allow it. No rules lawyers, no party poopers, just have fun. If the whole group laughs at the idea then just do it. Thanks
I wish the conjuration ability was more clearly defined, I like the advantage/disadvantage suggestion, that sounds way more plausible, thanks TransmorpherDDS
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/combat#UseanObject as I read it, since you are not attempting to do damage it counts as using an object that would require your action, not an attack action, thief skill fast hands lets you do that as a bonus action. Only works if you consider it same as handing an object to someone but you hand it to their face.
You are probably correct Sillvva, cleverly rewording the action does not change that they wouldn’t willingly want a pie in the face any more than a hammer to the head.
AntonSirius, I like the homebrew race, I was considering changeling so he could morph into a killer clown joker type when angered, kind of split personality.
No rules on this that I can find so we poll the forum. Conjuration wizard 2 for minor conjuration ability, lets say you use your action to conjure a banana cream pie (just go with it for the sake of argument, yes it has a cherry on top, no it does not count as more than one object.)
3 levels in rogue, thief subclass, fast hands ability lets you use an item as a bonus action.
Can you put the pie in someones face? Does this cause the blinded condition? At least inflict disadvantage? Can they still AoO when you run away? Does it use their action and a free hand to remove blinded/disadvantage? Does it look cool if you do it while dressed as a jester and reciting limericks? “I made a good pie for you to taste.
3 compadres intent on forming their own guild, heck with the campaign, we are sandboxing now. No healing? Steal potions. No tank? Reread swashbuckler, give him a cloak of displacement and send him in. No counterspell? The wizards never saw them coming. Roleplay a game of stealth assassin. It is versatility, a good DM should be able to adjust any adventure to the party if it is 1 or 10 PC’s so I am at what is fun. Having 3 of the same class with different subclasses would be entertaining IMO.
Druids- Moon, Stars, Shepherd
Wizards- Bladesinger, Abjuration, Chronurgist
Fighters-all battle masters but 1 is sword and board tank, 1 polearm style and 1 is ranged
3 bards- swords, eloquence, lore
Naw, definitely 3 rogues and a wild imagination and a gift for problem solving. Party name “the goodfellas”
After being led into a hallway in the kobold lair, dozens of intellect devourers drop from holes in the ceiling and along the walls, oil starts to spray from fire sprinkler devices above as the floor collapses on round 3 dropping everyone into a pit containing a giant gelatinous cube.
should the spellcaster still be able to levitate after his intellect gets devoured, toss a match. Impossible to concentrate long while on fire…
When you say TPK are you ok with brain devoured and body incinerated and bones dissolved in acid?
But Nem, how did the kobolds get so many intellect devourers? Have you ever met a kobold with a 3 intelligence? He is very difficult to pick out from the rest.
I am working on a planeswalker guide that takes a little of what strixhaven should have been and scrambles it into a rift world/ city of doors/ dark tower theme. PC’s born with the gift to travel the planes, rigorous training to learn to control it by tier 3ish, the nefarious agents of Nicol Bolas itching to subvert you or destroy you before then. On topic though… source book, adventure book, setting book… I don’t think it should be mixed up so much. I peruse 6 different titles when making a character now, one more title with a few subclasses and a new race or 2 , plus a new area and a story idea or three, aka more of the same… beat it into the ground. Feels so commercialized, next we will have a new best race and subclass like clickbait, oh we have to buy that to keep up.
Put all the races and subclasses in 1 book, I will permit 1 expansion in a few years.
Where is “enchant an item” the level 6 spell used to create most magic items in the game. RAW it is now just a money and time table with a few quests thrown in for rare components and recipes. I want to craft non standard wands and imbue personality (not sentience) into my cloak of levitation. Boots of kicking, hat of guidance, the weird stuff the DM isn’t putting in the loot box. Maybe craft and sell something to earn money to buy components to make my own custom staff of the arch-enchanter. It is so much cheaper to buy stuff from the loyal quartermasters of Iuz then to make something yourself, too limited for artificers to do so and that is their speciality. I need to hop over to sigil, find the door to Ebberon, haggle over the cost of dragon shards… find a dragon marked enchanter to sell me a book on how to use them….
No, you need downtime, 50,000gp and 6 fresh teeth from an adult red dragon plucked with golden pliers from a virgins sewing kit and in 8-12 months you can make your own flame tongue.
I like Hecate, in mythology she is represented with 3 faces sometimes because she has many aspects. She is the god of crossroads invoked by travelers and representing destiny, she is the queen of ghosts guiding lost spirits back to their final rest, she is also depicted as the goddess of magic.
Back in the day we used to represent Primus as the “one above all” in our campaign, we did not involve FR much so he was the equivalent of AO. The one and the prime…
The backstory sounds pretty fleshed out. Powerful mortals often can read minds so the idea of selective amnesia is worth considering, coupled with the noble background so you can get close to lords and ladies. She will have an underlying compulsion built into her nature that draws her to wealth and influence, when she is well inserted and has made her connections (gets mind shielding) certain memories will be returned.
I got to multiclass, it is an OCD affliction for me. Strength to the rp classes because she is intended to manipulate others, if I liked mastermind rogue better that would be initial class, instead I would start inquisitive rogue and add eloquence bard or vice versa. After you get the more influential abilities in both classes it is worth considering the combat classes for her eventual future in the lower planes, Paladin for 7 levels to cap her off keeps the character from getting to MAD and would really flavor her as a influential leadership role in any of the Dukes courts. Fighter for 6 levels somewhere in progression could make her deadly and gets you 2 more feats. Leaning toward BM for the maneuvers. 2 levels of paly would let her smite her bard slots away, that could be neat when added to sneak attack dice….
Race tiefling or changeling
roleplay notes LE, friendly and flirty to anyone with wealth, power, or potential. Expertise in insight to assess motivation and understand emotions, her performance skill might be tied to seduction. She portrays herself as sympathetic to her mark, a loyalist around men of honor or a capitalist amongst greedy merchants or nobility. She can be snide and high class or humble and common, personality traits would be changes like the weather, ideal: to command the heart and devotion of he who wields the power is to command more power than the wielder. (People will do stuff in the name of love they would never do otherwise) Bond: influence and secrets are greater than wealth, she is motivated only to gain more of both. Flaw: keeping track of who she is around different people gets complicated with more than one mark in the same room, accidentally flirting while in the company of a mark.
On the backstory- she had modify memory done on her to make her believe she is from a noble house elsewhere, moved to Baldur’s Gate to stay with relatives (loyal servants of Dispater) but she is bored and eager to get out of the mansion and have some fun and make new friends. Or she is planted in the local thieves guild as a courtesan to spy on the wealthy lords of the land. Your DM being a great storyteller should be able to easily suggest how she could best make herself available to the rest of the party. Remember lawful evil does not necessarily mean she is cruel or mean, you catch more flies with honey. The inherent evil in her nature is she serves a corrupt being or she serves herself but doesn't want everyone to know so she may act selfless and kind to influence others perception of her.
Our campaign back in the day always portrayed dwarves having an aversion to water, kind of a running joke. Thinking maybe Bruenor couldn’t swim… wasn’t he fished out of somewhere by the beard once? Need to reread my Salvatore. They are usually depicted in heavy armor. The cleric i mentioned picked dwarf because he only has str of 13 and dwarves ignore move restrictions for not meeting armor strength req. He lived, it worked out. We were doing salvage operation quest (freaking awesome adventure) and the turmoil in the chaotic finale sent him over the rail quite against his wishes. We talked about buoyancy for a minute and threatened to do math and the warlock leapt in holding an end of a rope while the paly secured the other end. Our warlock will do anything to avoid math, what a guy.
Having trouble locating anywhere in the rules where it says heavy armor sinks… obviously you can not stay afloat with 60 + pounds of heavy armor. Possible exceptions if you had a swimming speed built in to character. Is there an official ruling on this I overlooked or was it intentionally left out? Ghosts of Saltmarsh, the Dwarven Cleric in plate mail, shield and a sawed off warhammer falls overboard. Not to sound prejudiced but being a Dwarf you think there might be some disadvantage… then add the weight of his gear. No chance of treading water or he’s fine, just swim back to boat and make athletics check to climb back in?
As far as why to multiclass, it may be an OCD thing. I am usually running the game so when I get to play I want to get the most out of a character. The abilities gained at lower levels often outshine the mid tier benefits and I have only been back in the game for a few months, the highest level achieved so far is 10. From my reading characters rarely make it to 20 so it seems if the PB and slot advancement continue you can get more… options I guess by multiclassing. In this case you are probably right about single class being more beneficial. Not sure what level we are starting at but wasting levels on wizard instead of getting to 5th for spirit guardians… delaying 6th level ability for portent or something similar.. delaying 4th level spells… finding ink to buy to gain wizard spells in Barovia… better off till mid tier staying single class.
I have a message out to sage advice on the knowledge mechanic of channel divinity. Can’t find the question answered anywhere. I imagine the bottom line would be you can flavor it however you want but it is not going to lower a DC or grant advantage on a roll or provide specific information the DM wants you to quest for. Just basically add a PB and ability modifier to any roll… for 10 minutes a day. Trying to milk it into more is probably just going to frustrate folks.
Getting ready to start a new character for CoS, been wanting to multiclass this domain for awhile. Intelligence is the go to secondary trait for a lore heavy priest, remembering knowledge is important and it synergies with all the skills you get. Wizard then seems like the obvious choice, overall I like the scribe the best, war wizard is handy if you dip hard and chronurgist has very useful abilities at level 2. Divination mage… portent is nearly broken.
That being said… I think the enchanter has the best thematic compliment towards the knowledge level 6 ability, give him the Dimir spy background for the added spell list and all together I would lean into a priest of Dumathoin, so Dwarf I guess. (You can put the +2,+1 wherever now anyway so why not)
I have considered Artificer, almost settled on Bard but that makes it too MAD. Scribe manifest mind ability sounds really fun too. Not sure what the point of the Dimir cantrip is if no one else in the party can read the thought ribbons but I will still be pulling them out of other peoples minds and stuffing them in my sack…
So why the knowledge domain you ask? Peace and twilight are undisputedly the most useful mechanic, how could gaining a skill or tool proficiency for 10 minutes merit consideration? If you look at this ability as a broad generalization it is not convenient, help I am being grappled let me channel divinity for a +3 to my athletics check I am suddenly proficient in. I am taking knowledge not for the broad generalization of a skill, the RAW does not state that limitation, I am taking it for the ability to gain a specific skill, not just history but “the history of Barovia” not just intimidation but “psychological interrogation techniques” not just investigation but forensic pathology, not religion but the practical operations of the cult of Vecna, skip survival and go straight to typical ghost lore to learn weaknesses, cryptography to solve puzzles. Could you use this skill to gain knowledge like how to craft a specific magic item or to dramatically reduce the DC on a knowledge check because you are now an expert in a particular field? As a DM there are a lot of things I wouldn't allow but many things I would. The argument stands that the divine being granting the skill is nearly omniscient (the gods of knowledge know stuff right) where is the line drawn?
Everything can fall under intelligence or wisdom if you word it right so you get PB and a good ability modifier. Your diety is granting you knowledge, abuse the gift as much as your DM will let you get away with. Help I am being grappled, Vulcan nerve pinch… or whatever…
