Multiattack. The ape makes two fist attacks.
Fist. Melee Weapon Attack: +5 to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: 6 (1d6 + 3) bludgeoning damage.
Rock. Ranged Weapon Attack: +5 to hit, range 25/50 ft., one target. Hit: 6 (1d6 + 3) bludgeoning damage.
When's D&D going to add King Kong already
Probably not. Firbolgs are massive, 7-8 feet tall. The average male orangotan is 5'11. Also a firbolg is built similarly to a human. I can't think of an ape with a human-like build. Maybe the mythical big foot? But that would be a very different statblock.
Essentially, we're talking about a 'humanoid' that is almost tall enough to be considered large shifting shape into a a much shorter creature, that is probably featuring a top heavy build, for climbing around trees.
Barbarian/ Druid combo. Wild shape ape+ rage= go apesh*t
monky ape shit go wild
Apes should be smarter than 6. That's lower intelligence than an effing ORC.
edit: capitalization mistake
you mean a giant ape... they have those
Can apes be used for familiars in a ranger build, if ignoring the challenge rating requirements?
So I'm thinking about having an ape companion for my ranger, but I was thinking of getting him some armor. Any suggestions on what armor?
Armor made from the bones of your enemies (just joking). Note you are going to most likely have to get Barding {armor made for animals} for it, and probably going to have to get it custom ordered. The other note is Barding costs 4 times more then its ordinary counterpart, and weights twice as much by the written rules, so how much gold you have and are will to spend, along with carrying capacity {ape can carry 240 lbs) can be a factor. {Note all AC given include any Dex bonus that would apply, but does not include any prof bonus from being a ranger companion. It also assumes normal barding prices and weights}
- Hide Armor would give it 14 AC, the same as Studded Leather, but it would only cost 40gp compared to 180gp. Hide is even lighter a 24lbs compared to studded leathers 26lbs. Best of the cheapest in my opinion. If you need to go cheap but not that cheap a Chain Shirt would give AC 15 for 200gp at 40 lb, or Scale Mail for AC 16 at the same price for 90 lb, but does impose disadvantage on Stealth checks.
-Breastplate is the best option AC wise, if you do not want to impose Disadvantage on Stealth checks. It will give AC 16 at the cost of 1,600gp. Bonus its also lighter at 40 lbs.
-Alright, everything from here out is going with armor that does impose Disadvantage on Stealth. Half-plate would give AC 17 for 3,000gp and weigh 80 lbs. Splint would give AC 17 at the cost of 800gp, costing less then Half-plate, but weights 120lb . Plate would bump this up to AC 18 at the hefty cost of 6,000gp, at 130 lb.
In conclusion, if the ape is not going to participate in battle to much, and you just want to stick on some armor that will not impact the wallet, his carry weight, or stealth, Hide or Chain Shirt is the best. Breastplate is a good middle ground if you are willing to pay a bit more for protection, but still need him to make a Stealth check/carry stuff. If Stealth and carry does not matter, and you just want to make sure the Ape survives Splint provides the 2nd best protection without destroying the coin bag, with plate costing 5,200gp more but does give that additional +1 AC. And then there is the matter of getting someone to make it for you...
Note: GM may rule the Ape is close enough in from to a humanoid to be able to use regular armor, through then we get into proficiency issues. Still if the GM is willing to hand wave, then the armor weighs a lot less {can almost ignore this part) and costs a lot less and is easier to find. If this is the case (I'm assuming the DM may be a bit more forgiving in this regard given he has already allowed you to use a CR 1/2 for the Ranger Companion), Breastplate jumps up to being a relatively cheap option that should address all sides of quite nicely. Splint is now the super cheap option for defense, as weight is not as big of an issue, the only real issue being the Disadvantage on Stealth. And the difference between Splint and Plate is only 1,300gp, a bit more easier to stomach if you want the best AC for your ape buddy, and are willing and able to spend that much on it.
Orcs are people. Apes are animals. Of course the apes are dumber. 6 int is extremely high for an animal but unlike apes orcs have enough intelligence to have language and culture.
Perfect for when Planet of the Apes characters show up in the "anything goes" dnd text rp!
Im not joking it was great

Because they're of a humanoid shape, if you're a medium sized character and polymorph into an ape shouldn't you maintain your armour class?
