Amphibious. The chuul can breathe air and water.
Sense Magic. The chuul senses magic within 120 feet of it at will. This trait otherwise works like the detect magic spell but isn't itself magical.
Multiattack. The chuul makes two pincer attacks. If the chuul is grappling a creature, the chuul can also use its tentacles once.
Pincer. Melee Weapon Attack: +6 to hit, reach 10 ft., one target. Hit: 11 (2d6 + 4) bludgeoning damage. The target is grappled (escape DC 14) if it is a Large or smaller creature and the chuul doesn't have two other creatures grappled.
Tentacles. One creature grappled by the chuul must succeed on a DC 13 Constitution saving throw or be poisoned for 1 minute. Until this poison ends, the target is paralyzed. The target can repeat the saving throw at the end of each of its turns, ending the effect on itself on a success.
Well it does say "grappled" & that most likely the source of the grapple by a chuul.
Hey Lance, you can't stop me from studying on my free time away from the campaign...
But you cant tell people who don't know and if you don't know in the game then you can't use it.
Man, imagine this thing getting ahold of the squishy wizard with it's first pincer attack, the wizard failing the tentacle, and then getting hit by the second pincer attack while paralyzed.
I know what I'm filling this next catacombs with...
My understanding of how "it may also use this attack if X" is that it adds that attack to the multi attack function.
Ie., the Chull could pincer, grapple, justifying the conditions for tentacle, use tentacle, paralyze, then pincer again for an auto-crit at advantage. A dangerous combo, which should probably upscale it's CR if you ask me.
The Chuul, THE CHUUL!
Yees
Smash or pass
A hard smash with that many tentacles.
These are delicious with garlic butter.
Ima try to tame one
Essentially, this thing is a hybrid of a crab, Cthulu, and a praying mantis. The head is Cthulu, the pincers are the crab, and the body is the Mantis. And to answer anyone's question on how the Chuul holds those claws is similar to the Fiddler crab; it has a claw that is larger than its body and it carries it around just fine.
oh jeez
Aqua*
I like the idea that certain civilizations use Chuuls as gaurd dogs lol
I think this is pretty good, the only problem is that Skum seem to have more health than it. This isn't that much of a problem tbh as Chuuls get treasure and stuff for Aboleths (and their pincer paralysis thing is very interesting), while Skum's have a mindbreaking touch that definitely helps with the Aboleth's mind control charming thing.
I guess Chuuls are better as guard dogs and treasure gatherers while Skum are more useful as direct bodyguards
Imagine being so built the pincers don't feel heavy. o.O
Nope, whenever.
Honestly mind flayers look more like Voldemort than Cthulhu, what with that face and how they hold their heads. I mean you examine them closely and there's not much resemblance on that end, but that's always what I've thought looking through the Monster Manual. Still, the only thing that makes them look like Cthulhu is the tentacles, otherwise they really don't.
