Written "understands Common, Elvish, and Sylvan but can't speak them"-that says that if someone talking to di giant elk in Common, Elvish or Sylvan it will understand him, but it will not be able to respone him, "Giant Elk"-by di rules in di "Monsters" Chapter in Basic Rules, if only the name of the language is indicated, that means di monster can speak di language. So di giant elk can speak, understand & write (write?) di language called "Giant Elk".
