Brave. The gladiator has advantage on saving throws against being frightened.
Brute. A melee weapon deals one extra die of its damage when the gladiator hits with it (included in the attack).
Multiattack. The gladiator makes three melee attacks or two ranged attacks.
Spear. Melee or Ranged Weapon Attack: +7 to hit, reach 5 ft. and range 20/60 ft., one target. Hit: 11 (2d6 + 4) piercing damage, or 13 (2d8 + 4) piercing damage if used with two hands to make a melee attack.
Shield Bash. Melee Weapon Attack: +7 to hit, reach 5 ft., one creature. Hit: 9 (2d4 + 4) bludgeoning damage. If the target is a Medium or smaller creature, it must succeed on a DC 15 Strength saving throw or be knocked prone.
Parry. The gladiator adds 3 to its AC against one melee attack that would hit it. To do so, the gladiator must see the attacker and be wielding a melee weapon.
Description
Gladiators battle for the entertainment of raucous crowds. Some gladiators are brutal pit fighters who treat each match as a life-or-death struggle, while others are professional duelists who command huge fees but rarely fight to the death.
Why do gladiators get shield bash for dmg and shield master feat gets no dmg? Drives me crazy...shields were used to bash and hit opponents with the edges. Should be at least a d4+str bonus.
I count shields as "Improvised Weapons" at my table and as such are exactly that - a D4 + STR bonus weapon. I leave the AC bonus intact as martial classes don't need nerfing. I believe quite a few others stick to this. It also stacks really nicely with Tavern Brawler (adding Prof Bonus AND bonus action grapple).
Improvised Weapons: "An object that bears no resemblance to a weapon deals 1d4 damage (the GM assigns a damage type appropriate to the object). If a character uses a ranged weapon to make a melee Attack, or throws a melee weapon that does not have the thrown property, it also deals 1d4 damage. An improvised thrown weapon has a normal range of 20 feet and a long range of 60 feet."
yes
Putting the stats into a CR calculator, this comes out to CR 11
i must use this
kinda confused as to how its spear ranged attack does 2D6/D8 when it states with his brute ability that it only works for melee attacks.
It actually states that it deals an extra damage die when a melee weapon is used, not when it's a melee attack. Spears count as simple melee weapons. In 5e there's a difference between melee weapon and melee attack.
If a gladiator used a longbow or crossbow for example, their Brute feat would not trigger the extra damage, as those are ranged weapons.
I use this as a stronger guard
Shield Bash would fall under the three melee attacks. In small print sea melee so melee it be.

I think I'll use these guys as slightly more buff bandits
