Traits

Speed of the Small. When the yara-ma-yha-who starts its turn within 5ft of a larger creature, it can enter that creature's space and impose disadvantage on Dexterity saving throws on that creature. When a creature is disadvantaged in this way, the yara-ma-yha-who has advantage on any checks made to grapple the creature.

Symbiotic Relationship. The yara-ma-yha-who cannot move further than 120ft from its fig tree, and dies if the tree is destroyed. While in the branches of the fig tree, it in indistinguishable from the rest of the tree.

Transformation. If a creature is swallowed and regurgitated 1d4 + 1 times, it slowly transforms into a yara-ma-yha-who.

Vampiric Grapple. When a creature is grappled by the yara-ma-yha-who, the creature is inflicted with 12 (2d12 + 6) necrotic damage, and restores half as many hit points to the yara-ma-yha-who every round.

Actions

Drop. When the yara-ma-yha-who starts its turn in its fig tree and is undetected, it can drop onto a creature within 5ft of the tree and attempt to grapple the target.

Multiattack. The yara-ma-yha-who makes three pummel attacks. It cannot take this action if it has a creature grappled.

Pummel. Melee Weapon Attack: +5 to hit, reach 5 ft., 1 target. Hit: 9 (2d6 + 3) bludgeoning damage. On a successful hit, the yara-ma-yha-who can attempt to grapple the target.

Swallow. Melee Weapon Attack: +7 to hit, reach 5 ft., one Medium or smaller creature the yara-ma-yha-who is grappling. Hit: the target is swallowed, and the grapple ends. The swallowed target must make a DC 16 CON saving throw; on failure, the target is poisoned; when poisoned in this way, the target is paralysed. The swallowed target is blinded and restrained, and it has total cover against attacks and other effects outside the yara-ma-yha-who. The yara-ma-yha-who can have only one target swallowed at a time.

If the yara-ma-yha-who dies, a swallowed creature is no longer restrained by it and can escape from the corpse using 10 feet of movement, exiting prone. If the swallowed creature is paralysed, it remains so for 2d12 hours or until fed yara-ma-yha-who anti-venom.

Description

The yara-ma-yha-who is a legendary creature found in Australian Aboriginal mythology. The creature resembles a little red frog-like man with a very big head, a large mouth with no teeth and suckers on the ends of its hands and feet.

The yara-ma-yha-who is said to live in fig trees. Instead of hunting for food, it is described as waiting for an unsuspecting traveller to rest under the tree. The creature then drops down and uses its suckers to drain the victim's blood. After that it swallows the person, drinks some water, and then takes a nap. When the yara-ma-yha-who awakens, it regurgitates the victim, leaving them shorter than before. The victim's skin also has a reddish tint to it that it didn't have before. It repeats this process several times. At length, the victim is transformed into a Yara-ma-yha-who themselves.

According to legend, the Yara-ma-yha-who is only active during the day and only targets living prey. "Playing dead" until sunset (it is said to only hunt during the day) is offered as a ploy to avoid attack. Stories of this creature were reportedly told to misbehaving children.
