Legendary Resistance (2/day). If Vladimir fails a saving throw, he can choose to succeed instead.
Regeneration. Vladimir regains 10 hit points at the start of his turn. If Vladimir takes fire or radiant damage, this trait doesn’t function at the start of Vladimir’s next turn. Vladimir’s body is destroyed only if he starts his turn with 0 hit points and doesn’t regenerate.
Rejuvenation. When Vladimir's body is destroyed, his soul lingers. After 24 hours, Vladimir’s soul inhabits and animates another corpse on the same plane of existence and he regains all his hit points. While Vladimir’s soul is bodiless, a Wish spell can be used to force it to go to the afterlife and not return.
Turn Immunity. Vladimir is immune to effects that turn undead.
Vengeful Tracker. Vladimir knows the distance to, and direction of, any creature against which he seeks revenge, even if the creature and Vladimir are on different planes of existence. If the creature being tracked by Vladimir dies, Vladimir knows.
Special Equipment. Vladimir wears a suit of +1 halfplate, etched with motifs of a dragons scales, and he wields a +2 greatsword with a hilt sculpted to resemble silver dragon wings and a pommel shaped like a silver dragon’s head clutching a black opal between its teeth.
Multiattack. Vladimir makes two weapon attacks; he can use Baleful Glare in place of one weapon attack.
Unarmed Strike. Melee Weapon Attack: +8 to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: 11 (2d6 + 4) bludgeoning damage. If the target is a creature against which Vladimir has sworn vengeance, Vladimir deals an an extra 14 (4d6) bludgeoning damage with his unarmed strike. Instead of dealing damage, Vladimir can grapple the target (escape DC 16) provided the target is Medium or smaller. A creature that is grappled by Vladimir takes 11 (2d6 + 4) bludgeoning damage at the start of each of its turns. Vladimir can grapple up to 2 creatures in this way at the same time, when he does so, he can’t make weapon attacks against other targets.
+2 Greatsword. Melee Weapon Attack: +10 to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: 20 (4d6 + 6) slashing damage. If the target is a creature which Vladimir has sworn vengeance against, Vladimir deals an extra 14 (4d6) slashing damage with the weapon.
Baleful Glare. Vladimir forces one creature he can see within 30 ft to make a DC 16 Wisdom saving throw. If the target fails the save, it becomes frightened of Vladimir for 1 minute. If the target fails save by 5 or more it is also paralyzed until Vladimir deals damage to it, or until the end of Vladimir’s next turn. A creature that is frightened of Vladimir in this way can repeat the saving throw at the end of each of its turns (with disadvantage if it can see Vladimir), ending the frightened and paralyzed condition (if applicable) on itself on a success.
Momentous Assault. When Vladimir hits the same creature with both of his weapon attacks in the same turn, Vladimir can use a bonus action to make one additional weapon attack against the target with advantage. If the attack is successful, the target must make a DC 16 Strength save or be knocked prone in addition to suffering the attacks regular effects. If Vladimir rolls a 19 or 20 on his bonus action attack; the target is forced to make its Strength save with disadvantage.
Stalwart Defense. Vladimir takes the dodge action and his speed is reduced to 10 ft until the end of his next turn.
Tenacious Rebuke. When Vladimir is hit with a melee attack, he can use his reaction to make one weapon attack against the attacker with advantage; Vladimir can choose to target the attacker with Baleful Glare instead of making a weapon attack.
Vladimir can take 2 legendary actions, choosing from the options below. Only one legendary action option can be used at a time and only at the end of another creature’s turn. Vladimir regains spent legendary actions at the start of his turn.
Attack. Vladimir makes one weapon attack.
Move. Vladimir moves up to his speed without provoking opportunity attacks (subject to Stalwart Defense).
Cull The Shaken (Recharge 5-6, Costs 2 Actions). Creatures that can see Vladimir within 60 feet and are frightened, must succeed on a DC 16 Wisdom save or take 27 (6d8) psychic damage.
Description
Vladimir Horngaard joined the Order of the Silver Dragon at a young age and quickly earned the friendship of its founder, the silver dragon Argynvost. When he became a knight of the order, he traveled to distant lands to wage war against the forces of evil. The dragon stayed home and, in the guise of a human noble named Lord Argynvost, brought new initiates into the order.
Enemies of Strahd. Vladimir found himself fighting Strahd’s armies time and again as they swept across the land. When it became clear that Strahd couldn’t be stopped, the knights of the order led hundreds of refugees to Argynvost’s valley, but Strahd tracked them to their sanctuary and overwhelmed them with a vast force. Vladimir, whom Argynvost had made a field commander, couldn’t hold back the evil tide and was killed, only after the heartbreak of witnessing Strahd himself slay Vladimir’s beloved, his fellow knight Sir Godfrey Gwilym. With the battle won, Strahd surrounded Argynvostholt. Rather than cower in his lair, Argynvost emerged and battled Strahd’s armies to the bitter end.
Deadly Vengeance. Unwilling to accept his failure, Vladimir returned as a revenant. So great was his hatred of Strahd and his thirst for vengeance that those feelings fueled the spirits of many of his fellow knights—including Godfrey—to come back as revenants as well. Vladimir continued to wage the hopeless war, even as Strahd tightened his grip on the valley.
When Strahd became a vampire, Vladimir and his revenants should have gone to their eternal rest. But Strahd’s deeds were so heinous that Barovia and the knight’s spirits became trapped behind curtains of mist.
Blinded by Hatred. Vladimir hates Strahd but doesn’t want to see the vampire given his final rest. Vladimir wants Strahd to suffer forever for the deaths of Godfrey and Argynvost, the destruction of their order, and all the other crimes of which the vampire is guilty. Vladimir believes that all of Barovia has been swept into hell, and he wants to make sure that Strahd stays trapped in it forever. It angers Vladimir that he and his fellow knights are also trapped, but in Vladimir’s mind, such is the price of keeping the vampire confined. Even his love for Godfrey is now just a dim memory shrouded by his hate.
Were Vladimir to let go of his hatred, his spirit would find peace and could remember the warmth of love. Were Strahd to be defeated, even temporarily, the mists surrounding Barovia would fade, allowing the spirits of Vladimir and his knights to enter the afterlife. Nevertheless, Vladimir would rather savor Strahd’s torment than bring peace to his fallen order or peace to the land of Barovia. Gone are the days of honor and valor.
Vladimir Horngaard’s Traits
Ideal. “Vengeance is all I have left.”
Bond. “I have sworn oaths of allegiance to the Order of the Silver Dragon. Broken though the order may be, my allegiance never dies.”
Flaw. “Destroying Strahd would end the vampire’s torment, and that is something I will never allow.”
Lair and Lair Actions
Vladimir’s lair is the ruined fortress mansion of Argynvostholt.
Lair Actions
On initiative count 20 (losing initiative ties), Vladimir takes a lair action to cause one of the following effects.
- Until initiative count 20 on the next round. The area in a 30 ft radius sphere centered on Vladimir becomes blisteringly cold. Creatures other than Vladimir that enter or start their turn within the area must succeed on a Constitution save (DC 16), taking 10 (3d6) points of cold damage on a failed save; and only half as much damage on a successful one.
- Vladimir summons 2 phantom warriors (phantom warrior) to aid him in combat. The phantom warriors each appear in an unoccupied space within 20 ft of Vladimir. The phantom warriors arrive on the ethereal plane and may act immediately. Until these phantom warriors are destroyed, or after a period of 1 week has passed, Vladimir cannot use this ability again.
Regional Effects
The region surrounding the ruin Argynvostholt is over watched by what remains of the silver dragon Argynvost’s spirit, which creates the following effect.
- Revenants and phantom warriors within 3 miles of Argynvostholt gain advantage on the first attack roll, ability check, or saving throw they make in an encounter.
If the beacon of Argynvost is lit, Vladimir and his revenants immediately depart for the after life, free from Barovia forever.
