Posted Jun 11, 2026I realize this is a stupid question, but I want to learn to start a group with my son and his friends. Hit: 4 (1d4+2) means a hit can do 4 times (6+2=8), so 32 damage for one blow. I ask because that's a huge jump from when bats and spiders only do 1 damage a hit & this is still considered a CR of 0. Should it be read a s 4 + (1d4+2) for a max of 12 damage?

Posted Jul 2, 2026Think of that 4 as a sort of average damage the creature can cause in that attack. It's essentially just for people who don't want to do an actual damage roll for whatever reason, you're free to either ignore it and use damage rolls for creatures or use it forgo damage rolls, it's entirely up to the DM.
