Ok, at least they gave the Giant Owl spells to make the Celestial change make some sort of sense, but the Giant Eagle and Elk got ripped off. Poor Moon Druids. :(
This and the others appears to be simply a nerf to Moon Druids and them not wanting to provide another party member flying at level 8 for some reason. They are clearly just large animals with nothing special about them and therefore should be beasts.
During my session zero, I like to establish a ban on PVP. I do this because I want the players to feel like no matter what I throw at them, they have each other to rely on. Because my favorite monsters to run...
...are monsters that are basically ambush predators that track you with invisible cameras.
In a video Jeremy Crawford reasoned that since Giant Owl and Giant Eagle can speak, they can't be normal Beasts.
Which is kind of backwards, it's not like someone else decided they can speak. If they wanted to balance druids they could've just said so.
Kinda feels weird a polymorph caster can take advantage of the spellcasting from this form vs druid who waits until level 18 RAW.
Did you forget that Polymorph also needs to be a beast? You can't do that.
They're in a weird section being put into apart of beasts that you can wild shape and polymorph into.
It's more about the Giant Eagles being fundamentally based on the similar eagles of Middle Earth, which are literally angel-like beings. I personally don't hate that these creatures now represent a sort of "greater spirit" of these kinds of animals. It's like Bambi's dad, or the Mononoke King of the Forest.
It gives me a really easy starting point to make the capital-g "Great" Spirit version, like Rocs and Phoenixes, etc.
