Aberrant Ground. The ground in a 10-foot Emanation originating from the mouther is Difficult Terrain.
Gibbering. The mouther babbles incoherently while it doesn’t have the Incapacitated condition. Wisdom Saving Throw: DC 10, any creature that starts its turn within 20 feet of the mouther while it is babbling. Failure: The target rolls 1d8 to determine what it does during the current turn:
1–4. The target does nothing.
5–6. The target takes no action or Bonus Action and uses all its movement to move in a random direction.
7–8. The target makes a melee attack against a randomly determined creature within its reach or does nothing if it can’t make such an attack.
Bite. Melee Attack Roll: +2, reach 5 ft. Hit: 7 (2d6) Piercing damage. If the target is a Medium or smaller creature, it has the Prone condition. The target dies if it is reduced to 0 Hit Points by this attack. Its body is then absorbed into the mouther, leaving only equipment behind.
Blinding Spittle (Recharge 5–6). Dexterity Saving Throw: DC 10, each creature in a 10-foot-radius Sphere centered on a point within 30 feet. Failure: 7 (2d6) Radiant damage, and the target has the Blinded condition until the end of the mouther’s next turn.
The art goes so hard
Absolutely horrifying and I expect nothing less from this iconic intro level abberation!
I love this monster, I'm a little confused about Blinding Spittle being Radiant damage though. I feel like Acid or Necrotic would fit the aesthetic more naturally.
Oof. Lost 2 hit die, reducing health from 67 to 52. Did gain an increase in movement speed. Never could get why these guys could swim.
Aberrant Ground is nerfed. It used to be difficult terrain AND creature starting its turn in that area must make DC 10 Strength saving throw or have 0 speed until the start of its next turn. Gibbering isn't changed, just reworded for a simpler list.
Once again, Oof. Lost multiattack where it could use Bite and Blinding Spit if recharged. Bite was also heavily neutered, going from 17(5d6) piercing to 7(2d6). However, the DC 10 Strength saving throw against prone is removed, instead being an automatic prone. Bite is now an instant death if it reduces someone to 0, but you can take their gear, which is nice if you have a rogue who stole a bunch of stuff from the party.
Blinding Spittle's range was increased from 15ft. range and 5ft. sphere centered on a point to 30ft. range and 10ft. sphere. Dexterity saving throw was reduced from DC 13 to DC 10, and the spit does Radiant damage along with blindness.
I've never used a Gibbering Mouther before, despite them being the "staple aberrations." However, by looking at the statblocks for both old and new, the new one got neutered heavily. Lost health, damage, and debilitating effects at the cost of moving faster, automatic prone, and instant death by bites if you're reduced to zero.
Fusion time! Use the health of the old, but speed of the new. Use the Aberrant Ground of the old. Use the 17(5d6) bite damage from the old, but the effects of the new. Lastly, use the higher DC 13 for the Blinding Spittle to create a challenging Mouther.
having used Gibbering Mouthers, I can tell you these nerfs were neccisary. They were incredibly overtuned for a CR 2.
