Regeneration. The oni regains 10 Hit Points at the start of each of its turns if it has at least 1 Hit Point.
Multiattack. The oni makes two Claw or Nightmare Ray attacks. It can replace one attack with a use of Spellcasting.
Claw. Melee Attack Roll: +7, reach 10 ft. Hit: 10 (1d12 + 4) Slashing damage plus 9 (2d8) Necrotic damage.
Nightmare Ray. Ranged Attack Roll: +5, range 60 ft. Hit: 9 (2d6 + 2) Psychic damage, and the target has the Frightened condition until the start of the oni’s next turn.
Shape-Shift. The oni shape-shifts into a Small or Medium Humanoid or a Large Giant, or it returns to its true form. Other than its size, its game statistics are the same in each form. Any equipment it is wearing or carrying isn’t transformed.
Spellcasting. The oni casts one of the following spells, requiring no Material components and using Charisma as the spellcasting ability (spell save DC 13):
1/Day Each: Charm Person (level 2 version), Darkness, Gaseous Form, Sleep
Invisibility. The oni casts Invisibility on itself, requiring no spell components and using the same spellcasting ability as Spellcasting.
New Oni, but still the same idea to play one as a nightmare against your players.
Holy, regeneration + bonus action invisibility is a deadly combo.
Finally, a living nightmare to torment innocent players and NPCs alike.
An Oni shape shifted and pretending to be an ogre makes for a fun reveal, my players loved it.
I can't believe the Oni still doesn't have the 'Shapechanger' subtype. I'm definitely headcanoning it for my games
That's because in the 2024 rules there is no such thing as the "Shapechanger" subtype anymore. Any effect that used to target Shapechangers now refers to a creature this is shape-shifted . Shape-shifting is a general game term now, and includes all Druids that are wildshaped, all creatures that were previously labeled as Shapechangers when they aren't in their true form, and creatures under the effects of spells like Polymorph.
I strongly dislike the fact that they stopped telling us what armor a monster is wearing. It makes modifying monsters harder. It wore chainmail before but it's AC is 1 higher now. Why? What if I want to put it in plate or leather? This feels like a slouch into the MMOy 4e monsters (some of which were great, but not because we didn't know what armor it was wearing).
I think, if it were wearing armor, it would be in it's loot table. I think it's just got natural armor now.
I preferred it when they could infinitely cast Darkness, plus bonus action invis is too OP. I'll still be using the old version.
the Oni should have blindsight for 15'. When it casts Darkness, its third eye on its forehead opens; and the spell eminates from that eye.
