Diabolical Restoration. If the pit fiend dies outside the Nine Hells, its body disappears in sulfurous smoke, and it gains a new body instantly, reviving with all its Hit Points somewhere in the Nine Hells.
Fear Aura. The pit fiend emanates an aura in a 20-foot Emanation while it doesn’t have the Incapacitated condition. Wisdom Saving Throw: DC 21, any enemy that starts its turn in the aura. Failure: The target has the Frightened condition until the start of its next turn. Success: The target is immune to this pit fiend’s aura for 24 hours.
Legendary Resistance (4/Day). If the pit fiend fails a saving throw, it can choose to succeed instead.
Magic Resistance. The pit fiend has Advantage on saving throws against spells and other magical effects.
Multiattack. The pit fiend makes one Bite attack, two Devilish Claw attacks, and one Fiery Mace attack.
Bite. Melee Attack Roll: +14, reach 10 ft. Hit: 18 (3d6 + 8) Piercing damage. If the target is a creature, it must make the following saving throw. Constitution Saving Throw: DC 21. Failure: The target has the Poisoned condition. While Poisoned, the target can’t regain Hit Points and takes 21 (6d6) Poison damage at the start of each of its turns, and it repeats the save at the end of each of its turns, ending the effect on itself on a success. After 1 minute, it succeeds automatically.
Devilish Claw. Melee Attack Roll: +14, reach 10 ft. Hit: 26 (4d8 + 8) Necrotic damage.
Fiery Mace. Melee Attack Roll: +14, reach 10 ft. Hit: 22 (4d6 + 8) Force damage plus 21 (6d6) Fire damage.
Hellfire Spellcasting (Recharge 4–6). The pit fiend casts Fireball (level 5 version) twice, requiring no Material components and using Charisma as the spellcasting ability (spell save DC 21). It can replace one Fireball with Hold Monster (level 7 version) or Wall of Fire.

Posted Feb 5, 2025Yeah. I don't know what the hell is going on with this piece of art.
Other fiends of similar or close statures - the Horned Devil and the Balor - are so much more impressive than this.
This is not meant as a rag for the artist of the picture, but I strongly feel like the art direction is what really failed here.
Thankfully, as a legendary creature, the Pit Fiend gives a better showing than before. How it had been reduced to a 'normal' monster in 4th and 5th 2014 was beyond my understanding.

Posted Feb 6, 2025Also got +2 AC, 37 HP, +6 passive perception, that Hellfire Spellcasting is insane casting both level 7 hold monster, which is an amazing spell on its own and worth an entire action, and also gets a free fireball. That means that 3 PCs now have to all pass a DC 21 CON save or the party is just screwed because losing 3 people to hold monster is an almost certain TPK for a 4 person group. Oh ands its overall damage increased by a little bit. This is an amazing glow up.

Posted Feb 14, 2025Such a goofy art for an epic creature. It's not bad, just totally off the tone.

Posted Feb 25, 2025The art could be a lot more badass but I think it’s a step up from the old 5e art which made the pit feind look like an oafish brute at best, I kept assuming that it was a demon rather than a devil. This one might look kinda lame but at least it looks like he’s giving orders or something and is capable of math.

Posted Mar 9, 2025I think it's the expression that looks a little off. I do really like the inclusion of armor as it helps drive home the fact it is a devil general not a beast of war and I really like the pauldron chitin things on it's shoulders.

Posted Mar 12, 2025Question. Is the spellcasting action in addition to his multiattack, or does casting those spells replace one or more attacks?

Posted Mar 14, 2025They are mutually exclusive. The Pit Fiend can spend an action to use Multiattack or use Hellfire Spellcasting but not both.

Posted Mar 24, 2025I dont get when becoming a nightmare to your players became a glow up. Pit fiend needed a buff, but this is overkill. Well at least he can be countersp
.. oh right. He will just legendary res and say screw you and tpk anyway. If he even need to lr since of course they made it a con save.
Well, since its already a must to take resilient in con for spellcasters in 2024 anyway due to the same counterspell, they might have a chance to survive.

Posted Oct 9, 2025Comments are throwing me for a loop; looks like its commanding the forces of Avernus/Devils in a battle against the Demons of the Abyss.
These guys aren't supposed to be sitting in a dark corner foaming at the mouth, but the generals/leaders of the Nine Hells armies - that presumably speak/shout at the creatures they're in command of on the battlefield.
That seems consistent with the art here.

Posted Oct 23, 2025Now this is befitting a general of the Nine Hells. I love the new art too, though I don't like his head. I'm not a fan of those massive horns, and I prefer the more monstrous face he had in the old art with that large, fang-filled maw, over this much more human face.
