Multiattack. The wererat makes two attacks, using Scratch or Hand Crossbow in any combination. It can replace one attack with a Bite attack.
Bite (Rat or Hybrid Form Only). Melee Attack Roll: +5, reach 5 ft. Hit: 8 (2d4 + 3) Piercing damage. If the target is a Humanoid, it is subjected to the following effect. Constitution Saving Throw: DC 11. Failure: The target is cursed. If the cursed target drops to 0 Hit Points, it instead becomes a Wererat under the DM’s control and has 10 Hit Points. Success: The target is immune to this wererat’s curse for 24 hours.
Scratch. Melee Attack Roll: +5, reach 5 ft. Hit: 6 (1d6 + 3) Slashing damage.
Hand Crossbow (Humanoid or Hybrid Form Only). Ranged Attack Roll: +5, range 30/120 ft. Hit: 6 (1d6 + 3) Piercing damage.
Shape-Shift. The wererat shape-shifts into a Medium rat-humanoid hybrid or a Small rat, or it returns to its true humanoid form. Its game statistics, other than its size, are the same in each form. Any equipment it is wearing or carrying isn’t transformed.
This is the best artwork that could be done?
??
It looks good
Artwork looks awesome!
The artwork is part of a larger picture, that's why it looks a bit weird.
Agreed, D&D art should not be lazy like this.
No mention of silver or immunity to normal weapons? I know the 2024 way is to make no distinction between magical and non-magical BPS damage, but it seems like that falls apart on creatures like this.
granted 60 hp is a marked step up from 2014, but it’s a signature feature of the monster and lycanthropes in general. This needed to cook a bit longer.
The way I think of DND 2024 with the no silver weapon effect,
is being a lycanthrope or were-anything imparts a huge mount of temporary hitpoints on a normal humanoid - a la polymorph, etc.
So the silver weapon for me is a vulnerability that allows normal people cut through their temp hp. Instead of a resistance to non silver.
Master Splinter, is that you? Why are you running from Yogi? You can totally take him!
Size used to be only Medium. Now is either Medium or Small. Gained 1 AC and 5 hit die, increasing health from 33 to 60. Gained 30ft. climbing speed. Also lost immunity to nonmagical bludgeoning, piercing, and slashing from nonsilvered weapons.
Dexterity score is raised from 15 to 16, changing the modifier from +2 to +3. Lost Keen Smell, but gained proficiency in Perception to make up for it. Darkvision used to be solely for the Rat form, now is universal for all forms.
Multiattack is functionally the same. Bite's damage is increased from 4(1d4+2) to 8(2d4+3), and PCs can no longer be lycanthropes under their control. DM gets that privilege.
Used to have a Shortsword that dealt 5(1d6+2) piercing, which is swapped out for Scratch for 6(1d6+3) slashing. Adds damage variety. Hand Crossbow's damage is increased from 5(1d6+2) to 6(1d6+3) due to the Dexterity increase.
The only thing I don't like about the new lycanthropes is their glaring lack of nonsilvered immunity. Seriously, that is their whole thing: needing silver or magic to hit them. Only one solution: Fusion.
Fusion time! Bring back their nonmagical bludgeoning, piercing, and slashing from nonsilvered weapon immunity. Simple change. Don't worry, wizards, you can still kill it with fireball.
