Description
A species of rodent found in almost any climate or terrain. These statistics can be used for gray squirrels, ground squirrels, chipmunks, woodchucks, prairie dogs, and marmots (among others).
Flying Squirrels.
Flying squirrels use the same statistics as regular squirrels, but have a glide speed of 30 ft. in addition to ground and climbing. Using their wing flaps, flying squirrels can glide at a ratio of 2 feet horizontally for every 1 foot vertically. In other words, a flying squirrel which starts out 50 feet above the ground can glide to a distance 100 feet before touching ground. While gliding, a flying squirrel cannot take any other action.
Familiar.
The squirrel and similar rodents can serve as a familiar by the use of Find Familiar
To be honest, if you upped both the walking and climbing speeds to 40, and also granted them proficiency in both (Athletics) and (Acrobatics) you would be closer to a real squirrel.
You should also include a Ground Squirrel variant as well with a 10-foot burrowing speed only a 30-foot climbIng speed and a grey coloration.
I effing love squirrels, they are one of my favorite animals. 🤗
I like this monster, I will check for some more Squirrel monsters.
Wow, this is great. It's like WoTC made it. I might replace the Dexterous feat with the Nimble Escape feat, since they're very quick and skittery.
Nimble Escape. The squirrel can take the Dash or Disengage action as a bonus action.
I would also grant it proficiency in Acrobatics, since it's so fast. I heard IamSposta's post regarding the actual speeds of the squirrel but I think they're relatively realistic, since when it's simply walking around it's slow enough for a human to catch it. Maybe bring its speeds up to 25 ft, but that's it. The problem is, when it begins to move, it's a real speedster, which is why Nimble Escape is a great feat for it.
I was about to say that it shouldn't have any effective attacks- but, never mind, squirrels do have strong jaws, so I can see them having a damaging bite.
A good stat block. One thing I should note is that with its dexterity, the Squirrel should have an AC of 11, not 10.
I think a speed of 20 ft. is a good fit (especially with the nimble escape feature suggested previously), as the Squirrels main method of escape should be climbing to inaccessible areas, not speed.
One interesting fact about squirrels: they can survive a fall from any hight. If you wanted to represent that in game, I'd use this feature:
Slow Fall If it’s not incapitated, the Squirrel descends 60 ft. per round and suffers no fall damage.
Edit: Whoops! I wasn’t the first to mention the AC or the fall idea. Should have read the other post before commenting on the stat block. Anyways, have a pleasant day.
Nice and simple, I like it.
awsome
