Combat Tracker ALPHA UPDATE Mar 17, 2020
Additions: As much as we love our fearless leader and our designer's cat Zummo, we have removed Happy Adam and Bob Ross Adam from the Combatant avatar fallback images and replaced them with something more generic and familiar.
Fixes: The old text color for initiatives on friendly and enemy combatants had the appearance of being inactive, so we improved initiative contrast and darkened some color so it is less confusing.
Combat Tracker ALPHA UPDATE Mar 10, 2020
Additions:Hit Point Widget added: We all know that most D&D Players don't particularly care for doing math while they tell their story, so we have implemented a HP adjustment widget to help you add and subtract Hit Points.
Now when you "click" on monster stat block links (tooltips) it will open in a new tab preventing your Combat from loosing all of it's progress.
We have been using the Combat Tracker in our home games for a few weeks, and although it is certainly not in a finished state yet, we experienced enough value that we have decided to go ahead and release it now - even in its unfinished state - to both 1) let subscribers gain some of that value and 2) get feedback as early as possible.
Please keep in mind that this is not a finished product, and we invite subscribers to help us make it the best it can be!
Who can use the Combat Tracker?
All D&D Beyond Subscribers. The Combat Tracker is in full active development right now. We will be allowing early access to NEW Combat Tracker features to our Subscribers first, to prove out concepts and new functionality. We took the same approach with the Alpha version of the Encounter Builder with much success. This delivery method allows us to digest feedback in bite sized chunks and perform testing to figure out the best user experience possible.
What is a Development Alpha?
The Development Alpha of the Combat Tracker allows us to test features and user experience.
-
Functional but expecting a lot of bugs
-
Should be no core functionality bugs
-
Core functionality could change with feedback
-
Functionality could appear or disappear at any time
We will be working on validating bug reports and cleaning up the Combat Tracker. Once these tasks have been completed we will release to Beta, essentially meaning the Combat Tracker tool is complete.
Please leave Feedback here
Would appreciate instead of putting creatures that have the roll the same initiative in alphabetical order by name instead having them listed by their initiative modifier with the ability to manually move the creatures in the tracker.
Totally agree with all these feature requests, and two more:
5) on the tracker, have a preview for PC stats too (at least the basic like AC, passive scores, spell attack & save, along with a link to open the full sheet in a separate tab)
6) status effects, round number, concentration, all would be nice to see if they could be done without getting too busy/complicated (but a visual cue next to the HP that somebody needs to make a concentration check would be super handy since I doubt I'm the only one who tends to forget those)
Wary of dndbeyond trying to reinvent the wheel with its own VTT, though. A lot of people are pretty invested in things like roll20, so just some smoother integration would be really great... like acknowledging how great Beyond20 is and making it work even better. It's a great first step that Beyond20 integrates with the roll20 initiative tracker, for instance... but one problem is that as soon as you edit the encounter it seems like you lose all your numbers, so being able to pre-roll initiative, add creatures mid-fight more smoothly, and not lose init numbers if you have to save the encounter and come back later would all be great (if they're already there I haven't figure out how to make it work)
Having waded through 10 pages and run a sample encounter:
Overall: it would be helpful to have a list of “in the pipeline” items on this page; for example, in the comments I read auto-save will be implemented at the end, which makes sense, but it would help keep suggested improvements to things y’all are not already planning
Upgrades/additions I like from others (in order of preference):
Must haves
Auto-save (my computer crashes at random times, plus the whole inadvertently-clicking-a-link issue) (I understand, as noted above, why this isn’t implemented yet)
Pulling Player HP (also, I understand, this is planned)
Really should haves:
Notes section for each participant (note this becomes less of a need if many of the other items are included)
The ability to rearrange tracker order/edit initiative (maybe with decimals, to rearrange order)
More integrated status/effect/condition/spell tracker
The ability to add monsters from sources (with their full stat block filled out) in the middle of combat
The ability to edit monster/player names
Monster/NPC ability/spell slot tracking
The ability to remove/hide players/monsters in the tracker
Link to pull up character sheets like happens with monsters (and have this auto populate when you click “Next”)
Some kind of player view (and like the idea of their being able to roll/enter their initiative as part of this; also might be cool for them to see the monster pic but not the name for monsters they can see)
High on the would-like-to-have list:
Allow stat adjustments to the displayed stats (like AC if shield dropped or spell cast)
The rest on the would-like-to-have list:
Loot distribution (so players can easily add to their character sheets), tied to monsters (so if the bandit captain escapes, their loot does not show up)
Auto-add of lair effects
The ability to add pets/mounts/familiars/summoned creatures automatically (though this is lower level, but certainly increases the need to be able to add creatures with full stats and not just manual entry)
I like the idea of thinking “what is useful on the stat block when it is not that participant’s turn”
Also … I don’t currently use a separate VTT, so I’d love the more functionality DnDBeyond could offer.
For Encounter Builder (in order of preference):
Allow adding friendly/NPCs
Provide three options for HP: average, rolled, manual
Adding created characters as “enemies”
You would improve my quality of life greatly by having an "END ENCOUNTER" button that leads to the automatic distribution of experience points. That means you will need a "declare creature dead" function, if run from encounter is not used, to allow for the encounter to end.
Is this still in active development? No update since last year?
Yes, it's transitioning from alpha to beta sometime in the next couple weeks. They are supposed to have a deep dive video on the dev update stream this Thursday to discuss the new features coming with beta.
