Combat Tracker ALPHA UPDATE Aug 8, 2020

Combat Tracker ALPHA UPDATE Mar 17, 2020
Additions: As much as we love our fearless leader and our designer's cat Zummo, we have removed Happy Adam and Bob Ross Adam from the Combatant avatar fallback images and replaced them with something more generic and familiar.
Fixes: The old text color for initiatives on friendly and enemy combatants had the appearance of being inactive, so we improved initiative contrast and darkened some color so it is less confusing.
Combat Tracker ALPHA UPDATE Mar 10, 2020
Additions:Hit Point Widget added: We all know that most D&D Players don't particularly care for doing math while they tell their story, so we have implemented a HP adjustment widget to help you add and subtract Hit Points.
Now when you "click" on monster stat block links (tooltips) it will open in a new tab preventing your Combat from loosing all of it's progress.
We have been using the Combat Tracker in our home games for a few weeks, and although it is certainly not in a finished state yet, we experienced enough value that we have decided to go ahead and release it now - even in its unfinished state - to both 1) let subscribers gain some of that value and 2) get feedback as early as possible.
Please keep in mind that this is not a finished product, and we invite subscribers to help us make it the best it can be!
Who can use the Combat Tracker?
All D&D Beyond Subscribers. The Combat Tracker is in full active development right now. We will be allowing early access to NEW Combat Tracker features to our Subscribers first, to prove out concepts and new functionality. We took the same approach with the Alpha version of the Encounter Builder with much success. This delivery method allows us to digest feedback in bite sized chunks and perform testing to figure out the best user experience possible.
What is a Development Alpha?
The Development Alpha of the Combat Tracker allows us to test features and user experience.
-
Functional but expecting a lot of bugs
-
Should be no core functionality bugs
-
Core functionality could change with feedback
-
Functionality could appear or disappear at any time
We will be working on validating bug reports and cleaning up the Combat Tracker. Once these tasks have been completed we will release to Beta, essentially meaning the Combat Tracker tool is complete.

If you're having trouble finding it, go to 'My Encounters'. By each of the encounters you've created, there'll be a button that says 'Run'. Click that and you're there.
So tonight I was going through my Dragon of Icespire Peak campaign, setting up encounters for them as we move along and I had a thought. I think a great feature to add in at some point for the encounter builder in general is when we have a purchased adventure that you could auto populate the encounters with those from the adventure.
Also I run a West Marches game with more then one DM, it'd be great if we could select other people in the campaign as DM's as well so they can set up encounters using the builder linking it to the campaign.
I assume a goal at some point is to link the character sheets into the builder?
Something I just thought of. I know everyone is talking about an easy way to modify NPC stats. Like max/change hit points or AC. Building on that I would like to see a way to automatically add an edited NPC to your homebrew. This way if you modify a creature and want to use it in the future you could easily find it instead of changing each NPC's stat block individually.
I imagine an edit button over the stat block in the Encounter Builder/Combat Tracker. You would click it and the homebrew editor for the NPC would pop up in a new window. Now at the bottom of the stat block, you could have button options.
Cancel - self-explanatory.
Save - save a copy of the monster to homebrew to be easily used in the future.
Apply - apply the changes only to the NPC in the current combat/encounter.
Oh and just have to mention again the losing the turn tracking/hit points any time you forget to right-click and open in new tab/window is annoying. Like really really annoying. There are other places in DDB where it by default opens a new tab/window. This is a must for the combat tracker.
When adding monsters to an encounter you can add the monster 3 separate times or specify 3 of them when adding them. If you do the latter they roll initiative together and get tagged with (A), (B), and (C).
Hope that helps.
And apparently clicking reply in an individual's post doesn't seem to thread it. At least on mobile.
I tried it for the first time today and i loved it!
It'd be neat if there were some button to "End encounter" and spilt exp between the players, and add some functionality to add extra exp to reward things like roleplaying during the encounter or succeeding other objectives during the fight.
Tried it today instead of a similar app, worked like a charm except for some missing features like status tracking, npc/enemy spell slot and ability tracking, setting max hp values etc. Great to have it all in one place! I'd also love to see auto-populated encounters based on the adventures, also synced hp/spell slot/ability tracking in a stat block format from players using dndb for their characters would be awesome!
if you click the add button multiple times they will roll independently. if you select add then add more in quantity they roll together.
That's what I said, the problem with rolling them independently is that it doesn't give me an identifier the way ti does if they were grouped together.
So i ran an encounter this weekend on my laptop, i accidentally clicked on a condition link in the monster stat-block which took me to that page, when i clicked the back button in the browser, to get back to the encounter it had reset and i lost all the updates to the enemies' hp as well as the initiative list. luckily it was almost over with only 2 enemies up but if multiple enemies with differing hp still up, could have been a mess. Need a way to preserve an encounter's last state should you accidentally leave the page.
I would assume saving the data will come towards the end, when all bits and bells are added and the necessary data to store is more formed.
I had the same issue in a game I ran last week.
I know that features are going to come and go with he combat tracker, but figure I will keep giving my input as things change. I noticed that the hit point entry field has been removed from the combat tracker. I hope this comes back. Even if it's only for monsters...I found it to be a huge benefit when running an encounter.
It’s there for me once I start the encounter
Why don't you fix the screwed up Favored Enemy problem before starting on new stuff? Boy, that would be an intelligent thing to do.
Ah hah! You are right! Thanks!!
Really looking forward to this. This, paired with a faster way to keep track of player hp, spell slots, and other vitals, would be amazing to have in one view.
Improvement suggestion.
The way the adding monsters and rolling initiative is nice and flexible. If you add one and then click + to add more then they use the same initiative roll, while if you add them multiple times they have their own initiative.
I would love to see one more step. If you combine monsters together into a group, they should use the same initiative roll.
Example: I have one zombie beholder, two ogre zombies, 3 skeletons, and 4 zombies. I want the zombie beholder and ogre zombies to have the same initiative and the skeletons and zombies to have another initiative.
Glad to see that the monsters now are taking their initiative bonus/penalty into their calculation.
I'd like an option to roll monster hit points when they are added to the tracker, using their hit dice formula. It would be nice to be able to give a monster a name on the tracker for when players can see it, or to be able to hide monster names altogether. I agree with those who don't want to adjust the monster hit points themselves. It would be nice to be able to subtract damage or add healing, use temporary hit points, etc on the tracker.
Yes, I ran into the same issue! Even in alpha, IMO: Losing encounter state is a big deal and hopefully will be the first thing they resolve in the next update. I have a lot of wants for this, but this makes it unusable.
