Combat Tracker ALPHA UPDATE Mar 17, 2020
Additions: As much as we love our fearless leader and our designer's cat Zummo, we have removed Happy Adam and Bob Ross Adam from the Combatant avatar fallback images and replaced them with something more generic and familiar.
Fixes: The old text color for initiatives on friendly and enemy combatants had the appearance of being inactive, so we improved initiative contrast and darkened some color so it is less confusing.
Combat Tracker ALPHA UPDATE Mar 10, 2020
Additions:Hit Point Widget added: We all know that most D&D Players don't particularly care for doing math while they tell their story, so we have implemented a HP adjustment widget to help you add and subtract Hit Points.
Now when you "click" on monster stat block links (tooltips) it will open in a new tab preventing your Combat from loosing all of it's progress.
We have been using the Combat Tracker in our home games for a few weeks, and although it is certainly not in a finished state yet, we experienced enough value that we have decided to go ahead and release it now - even in its unfinished state - to both 1) let subscribers gain some of that value and 2) get feedback as early as possible.
Please keep in mind that this is not a finished product, and we invite subscribers to help us make it the best it can be!
Who can use the Combat Tracker?
All D&D Beyond Subscribers. The Combat Tracker is in full active development right now. We will be allowing early access to NEW Combat Tracker features to our Subscribers first, to prove out concepts and new functionality. We took the same approach with the Alpha version of the Encounter Builder with much success. This delivery method allows us to digest feedback in bite sized chunks and perform testing to figure out the best user experience possible.
What is a Development Alpha?
The Development Alpha of the Combat Tracker allows us to test features and user experience.
-
Functional but expecting a lot of bugs
-
Should be no core functionality bugs
-
Core functionality could change with feedback
-
Functionality could appear or disappear at any time
We will be working on validating bug reports and cleaning up the Combat Tracker. Once these tasks have been completed we will release to Beta, essentially meaning the Combat Tracker tool is complete.
Please leave Feedback here
That would probably be a suitable workaround, maybe even a permanent thing, I like it. Unfortunately it is kinda browser reliant, as far as I know it wouldn't work on Opera, for example.
On the friendly NPC side of things, not only would it be great to be able to add them in to the encounters, it would be great to have an NPC creator workflow, much like the existing character creator, but with a few more RND options for personality and quirks, etc. Feels like a pretty doable lift to fork the character creation workflow, so DMs can create and add NPCs to their campaigns and encounters.
I'm loving the tools and energy with all the existing tools, and I'm feeling confident I've spent money well by supporting DnDBeyond!
I purchased LMoP with the impression that the main encounters from this adventure would be pre-built into the tracker. (I’m aware not every encounter could be built this way, but the predesigned ones built into the adventure could).
This functionality would really add value to purchasing content through dndbeyond. At present I don’t think I’d bother purchasing other adventures this way as it is much handier having the paper copy, but the thought of pre-built encounters being available is what made me purchase the digital version rather than hard copies.
That is the goal.
Great 👍🏻
Would love to be able to make monster rolls as from the combat tracker.
I'd really like to rename the monsters in the combat tracker or apply nicknames. If you've got a lot of monsters of the same type, it would be useful to have a way of distinguishing between them.
I'd love to be able to use the dnd beyond digital dice when I open a creature's statblock on the combat tracker; players can use it with their character sheets, why not make attacks, etc, rollable in the same method?
Overall this is a good addition to the DnD Beyond suite, excited to use this in my session today.
I would like to fully opt out of the dice roller. While the feature is cool, I find no use for it. But even if I have it turned off, the browser still loads all assets for it.
What you are looking for when running an encounter?
In simple terms, anything that saves me time as a DM. So far the tracker auto-orders initiatives, easily helps me track NPC health bars, and has all their stats integrated. All positives.
How do you currently run encounters for your home games?
I've been using the Encounter Builder since it became available. Prior to that it was pen-and-paper for noting down initiative order and health amounts, with various DDB tabs open (on my tablet) with the different NPC stats.
How do you use / modify official encounters for your home games?
I prefer to run published campaigns, but I'll often make small changes like adjusting the health of individual enemies in a group - 10 orcs with 15HP each gets repetitive, and players who take notes will catch on. So some might end up with 10HP wilst others have 20. Keeps players on their toes. The ability to override the max health has helped that a lot.
Let us know anything else you want to share with us about encounter building!
The biggest thing I'd like to see (which I haven't seen in my glance through the nine pages of comments) is the ability to add or remove creatures from the initiative order whilst running an encounter. To give a current example (spoiler warning for Dragon of Icespire Peak):
My players are exploring Axeholm; I've pre-built some encounters in rooms with groups of ghouls and the upstairs room full of spiders. However, my players have made the age-old descision to split up. One (an Aarakocra) entered through a chimney whilst the rest managed to get in through the main door (without raising the alarm). The Aarakocra is now face-to-face with a bunch of giant spiders upstairs (no problem, I'll run my Spiders Upstairs encounter.) To reach her, the rest of the party will end up alerting some of the ghouls in the lower level. I can't add the ghouls to the Spiders encounter without leaving it, editing it, adding them, and restarting it.
As it stands, to add a new element I have to pause the game whilst I take a note of the initiatives already rolled, and any damage the NPCs have taken, and then add all of those values back in after restarting the encounter.
Additional things I'd like to see (but have already been mentioned, so just boosting): friendly NPC tracking/PC Familiar tracking; spell/effect duration by turn/round; reaction/legendary action checkbox (reset on turn start); lair action placeholder (if a creature with Lair Actions is in the Encounter, option to add a Lair Action "monster" at initiative 20).
Overall, it's great to use and I'm really excited to see it continue to develop!
Hey! Could you add a feature that would also allow you, as the DM to use characters that you've created stats for in the DnD Beyond, as the enemy?
Great work overall. It's easy and intuitive to use.
One comment on my side:
When player characters are added from a campaign, their current and max HP are zero. It would make sense to load them with the HP noted at the character sheet, at the time of the encounter creation.
This is coming.
Another vote for the option to have multiple monsters labeled with numbers instead of letters, ie, Kobold (1) and (2) instead of Kobold (A) and (B). And dice rolling by clicking on the monster's attack/save in stat block (like Beyond20 extension).
First off let me say wow!! I love this feature it has helped streamline combat very efficiently. I was wondering if there is a way that you can pull player hit points in with my players charter In the campaign it will pull the charter but hit points are blank? I know I might be reaching a little too far into the goodie bag but I think it would be awesome to be able to see not only current hit point total but any status effects(concentration, haste, hunters mark) as well as AC and other quick reference for each charter kind of like you can quickly pull up the monster stat block and how the monster hit points pull over as well. Sorry if I just had a case of verbal diarrhea but I’m very excited in the way you guys are going! Super helpful.
Having the ability to group monsters into one initiative would be nice. If I have 8 kobolds fighting the party, I only need kobolds in the initiative tracker 1 time.
Also, It looks like eventually player hp will show up in the encounter tracker for the DM. An option to hide that would be beneficial. I like to not know where my player are hp wise to keep me honest with combat tactics.
This has been an incredibly useful tool! I've saved a ton of prep time. One thing I'd love to see included though is a checkbox system for spells for enemy monsters, much like you'd see on the PC character sheets. I'm currently keeping track on a sheet of paper but I'd love to be able to have that all virtually tracked.
on the initiative entry for each creature, I find it redundant to have their hp , hit dice, and initiative bonus shown under their name, when HP is handled by the widget and the init bonus doesn't apply once everyone is in order.
Information that would be useful is the creature's AC, Saving throws, immunities/resistances, and also any reactions that they can take. This is the type of information that i need when it is not the creature's turn, that way i only need to have the stat block open for that creature during their turn.
that is the main thing that i would like to see.
having an app so i can run a game from my tablet, instead of a laptop would be great. especially if i could have the active creature stats up scroll through the stat block, then swipe for the next turn.
when can we expect the next update to the combat tracker?
I've created a campaign, associated characters to it, and created a series of encounters. When I run the encounter, the characters do not show up. If i go through Manual Add, the characters are non specific. There's no way to select the characters in the campaign to be included in the encounter, and they aren't automatically included. Not sure what to do, but at this point, it makes the whole setup kinda pointless.
I REALLY want this to work, as I love the direction. I also get that it's a beta, so patience is a virtue.
Did you link the encounter to the campaign? In the encounter editor interface, look for the "Manage Characters" button (on my computer, it is directly above the "Save encounter" button"). Where it says "Select Preset" choose the campaign (you may have to scroll to see the campaigns listed). One you have set the campaign and saved th encounter, when you click Run you should see the characters. (You won't see them in the build encounter editor, however, except under the manage characters setion)
