Greetings Everyone!
We're happy to announce the Digital Dice Alpha is now live on the Character Sheet for subscribers only.
These digital dice will help you reduce the math you have to do when playing D&D. We encourage everyone to give them a roll and tell us how they feel!
If you'd like to turn off Dice rolling on the character sheet for any reason, you can click on your character dropdown and toggle the Digital Dice off.
As a thank you, you will also receive a free set of Old School dice that celebrates our roots. You can activate them by going to the My Dice page under "Collections" on the top nav.
If you'd like to learn more about how to use the dice or to give us feedback, visit our Digital Dice Feedback Forum.
Thanks all. Happy rolling!

I like it, and cannot wait for the live version. Obviously, there will be some improvements - toggling the animated dice, perhaps some change to the size of the interface, toggling advantage/disadvantage, rolling damage with attack, toggling critical, etc. That's stuff people have already mentioned.
One I haven't seen yet is the ability to roll hit dice on a short rest. It is easy enough to roll a set number of dice as a custom roll however, so there is a possible work-around. But, the custom rolls do not have a way to add in any modifiers that I saw, so still need to do some math.
Speaking of, I'd like to see the dice roller come into play for creation and leveling - generating ability scores for those who like to do so, but also for HP rolls at level up; especially since HP Rolls are not saved anywhere - you have to trust your players to be doing correct math when they level up (or convert from paper to digital).
Very nice! I would like to be able to have a quick-button that rolls both to hit and damage on attacks and spells at the same time. And overall it´s pretty useless to my group until we can share the dice rolls with each other. But extremely promising and it looks amazing. Well done!
I can't wait for this to be accessible for the DM rolling for multiple monsters.
This is one of the things I noticed, too. And because of this, it also can't manage multiple charges from, say, a wand of magic missiles. It does appear to manage leveling up things that only affect one target, like Cure Wounds.
I wish as the DM we could roll our monsters from their sheets or in combat tracker
One thing I noticed, it doesn't auto correct for feats that make 1s in to 2s. Also it would be good in feature to be able to select dice to be re-rolled, for example empower spell.
You know, if you just add a white board, video and chat.. and share the dice rolls to all party members with the option to whisper the rolls to dm, we would have the complete package to play.
Dice roller is super cool and promises to be very useful! Here are a couple of thoughts:
1. basic dice for non-subscribers
2. Added to creatures in encounter builder
3. shared result in “running encounters”
4. My group was discussing the die roller and it was mentioned that “die-hard” purest wouldn’t use it, could you imagine someone like Laura Bailey form CR using the die roller. Then it was mentioned that a critical attack results should display an animated graphic, like fractal unicorns exploding or skull and crossbones, etc etc.
5. will conditions modify the die results ?
over all a nice feature that promises to save time and space in running the game.
Would have come in handy a few days ago, when all my D20's went mysteriously missing (the real D100 also, but that's less vital since I have plenty of D10's). It's nice that it does the mods and math automatically, but really needs to be tied to the DM. It'd be nice for an official API - I know the bot pulls character sheets, etc. - so that this could be integrated into other tools (e.g. Tabletop Simulator, Fantasy Grounds, etc.), which might improve the remote play situation for those playing remotely right now.
The dice need to be available from elsewhere, ideally, also - if you're running through the background generator, you're not on the final character sheet. Also you're not consistent right now about places you have the ability to do this having it wired up -- for example bardic inspiration use.
But still overall a potentially useful feature. Especially for folks who don't have a dice set yet.
How is this an alpha?! It looks smooth and works wonderfully!
I found one situation where a STR check didn’t appear as ‘Strength: check’ with check in purple, but as ‘Strength: roll’ with roll in ochre. However I can’t replicate this so no help there. The proficiency bonus was added in both rolls correctly though so for the end result it didn’t matter.
Keep up the good work, love stuff like this!
PS. As a dice goblin, I’m still not not using my own dice nor will this refrain me from buying more dice. ;)
PPS. iPhone XR, Chrome 81.0.4044.124, in case it helps.
Gorgeous. Well implemented. Manages to teach as it rolls. Looks good!
Love the look and feel of the dice roller if I can offer a little feedback though,
1) Would it be possible to get some sounds to go along with the dice roller? It's kinda cathartic hearing dice roll (Though that could just be me)
2) When looking through my spells I noticed that Sleep didn't have an option for rolling even though it is a spell that requires multiple dice rolls. Not sure if there are other spells like this, none come to mind atm, but it would be nice.
3) I haven't tested this with a group yet, but as far as I'm aware it only rolls dice on your screen, I could see people being accused of fudging rolls since they're self contained so if there was a way to share roll results visibly with your group to show you're being truthful would be nice.
Unless I missed it, can rolls taken with Advantage and Disadvantage roll two dice simultaneously, perhaps highlighting the relevant die?
:)))))))))))))
I really like this feature. IMO, it looks better on mobile than it does on PC, but c'est la vie. I see this as being one step closer to closing the gap on a VTT for D&D Beyond, you guys get a robust VTT and I'll never look anywhere else for D&D resources, you'll have it all. Great job guys, keep it up.
Don't know if this was already reported, my wizard has the Elemental Adept: Fire feat, and when I roll the damage for a fireball, it counts 1s as ones instead of twos. Looks great though.
Thanks to the D&DB team for adding this feature, it is something I have been looking forward to for a long time. I know it is only in alpha, so I provide the following feedback with the understanding that the embedded dice rolling feature for character sheets is far from a completed product.
LIKES:
- not having to switch to switch windows/apps to make dice rolls (when using physical dice is not practical/possible)
- realistic-looking dice images/animations
- different dice skins (assuming there are plans for more in future updates)
DISLIKES:
- no options to roll with Advantage/Disadvantage
- enlarged bonuses/attacks (blue boxes) changed the entire interface/proportions of the character sheet...now I have to scroll up/down to see all 19 skills : |
- on several practice rolls, the dice came to rest somewhere very near the edge of the screen, rolling d4s made it tough to see the number on top
REQUESTS:
- change the spacing/appearance of bonuses/attacks back to what it looked like pre-dice roller alpha and maybe add a little dice icon next to it instead
- add options to slow down the dice roll animations (less bouncing around)
- constrain the area where the dice come to rest on the screen to keep them from getting too close to the edges
Again, thanks D&DB for the work thus far on this feature. I look forward to seeing how it evolves as it moves toward full release!!
The dice are great. Can we also have them available on the character creation screen for stats?
this is going to be so useful once it comes out of alpha.
This might shed some light on that https://trello.com/b/vIKxuEs8
It is Dnd Beyond Developer roadmap
