One D&D and the 2024 Core Rulebooks
Wizards Presents brought us the biggest news to come to Dungeons & Dragons in nearly a decade. One D&D is the code name for three initiatives shaping the next generation of the tabletop roleplaying game. As part of One D&D, we’re…
- Updating and expanding on the existing rules of the game, culminating in the release of the 2024 core rulebooks
- Improving D&D Beyond, which serves as the digital front door to D&D and is home to your collection of digital books
- Building out the D&D Digital Play Experience, which is in early development but will serve as a virtual play space that’s integrated with D&D Beyond.
More on the 2024 Core Rulebooks
The 2024 core rulebooks will be backwards compatible, allowing you to continue enjoying the adventures and supplements you play with today. Our goal is to evolve the game in a way that reflects what players have told us they love and that makes it as versatile as them.
The 2024 core rulebooks are now in playtesting, with new drops of content dropping roughly every month. With each round of Unearthed Arcana materials, we’ll gather feedback from players like you to help refine the game.
To access playtest materials, you’ll need to unlock them for your D&D Beyond account. Sign in and then unlock playtesting by going to the UA claim page. Once you've unlocked playtesting, you can access the latest Unearthed Arcana materials by going into the UA compendium, found under the "Sources" menu.
For answers to all your burning One D&D questions, check out the FAQ page. And to keep up with the latest news on playtest materials for the 2024 core rulebooks, update your email preferences to permit communications from D&D Beyond.
A Dragonlance Book and Board Game on the Horizon
A war looms ahead, and you’ve answered the call to arms. Dragonlance: Shadow of the Dragon Queen is D&D’s action-packed return to the world of Krynn. The book will not only offer a brand-new Dragonlance story, it will offer new player options that help you better immerse yourself in this unique setting.
The adventure book will be supplemented by the Dragonlance: Warriors of Krynn board game, made in collaboration with renowned board game designers Stephen Baker and Rob Daviau. The board game takes players and their Dungeon Master into an epic battle experience that coordinates with the written adventure. However, the game isn’t at all required in order to play the D&D adventure.
Preorders for Dragonlance: Shadow of the Dragon Queen and Dragonlance: Warriors of Krynn have kicked off! These products represent the first time D&D has offered physical and digital bundles. You can read more about that in the product bundling FAQ. Want to learn more about the setting itself? Check out our Dragonlance primer!

Drizzt Is Turning 35
In 2023, we're celebrating 35 years of Drizzt in three big ways!
First, each eBook and audiobook from R.A. Salvatore's Legend of Drizzt series will be released with special 35th anniversary covers. Next, we have the forthcoming visual dictionary The Legend of Drizzt, which will take readers on a voyage across the Forgotten Realms with stunning new artwork depicting the iconic drow and the Companions of the Hall.
Finally, we're launching a family web comic on WEBTOON that follows Drizzt's young daughter, Brie, as she seeks to prove her worth as a hero! That story is written by Purpah—known for Suitor Armor—with guidance from R.A. Salvatore!
D&D Is Headed to Japan

When he isn’t in the DM’s seat or rolling dice as his anxious halfling sorcerer, he’s playing League of Legends and Magic: The Gathering with his husband. They live together in Los Angeles with their adorable dog, Quentin.
Planescape?! How fantastic!
Now... how do we talk about a Darksun campaign setting? :)
Darksun would be awesome! I'm gonna need to know more about Planescape if I'm expected to get excited for it, but Darksun? I'm all for a new and improved Darksun!
There are RPGs from outside Japan that have a decent presence. Call of Cthulhu is by some way the biggest. However I agree that I wouldn't expect D&D to be one of them when there's a lot of Japanese games covering similar space and already are well known and successful. I can't see it overtaking Sword World RPG as the top fantasy RPG.
How are you celebrating Drizzt in "big ways" with just some ebook covers and a couple comics? If the real books were getting new covers then that would be something good. But ebooks? Who tf cares about ebook covers?
Planescape is a fantastic mind****. Sigil - the city of doors, is a doughnut shape (everyone lives in the inside) watched over by a leader even the gods don’t **** with… each door or arch could be a portal to somewhere in the planes below.
The playtest material has full of horrible decisions that will absolutely get feedback against.
Love the changes! For the skill check one, just make it clear that players only make a check when the DM calls for one and we're good.
Love all the races including half-breeds and Ardling, but use the Fizban Dragonborn as the core one, at least Chromatic and Metallic.
Love the feats at 1st level
Love the Unarmed Strike and Inspiration changes.
Can't wait to see the class UA!
They did what to inspiration? My baby? One of the best features in 5e? Literally THE best tool for rewarding your players for creativity?
I agree with Ullantra here, I will never allow a character with a -1 modifier to beat a DC that's above 20, and I strongly advise against making sorcerers less powerful. I remind you WoTC, sorcerers can cast fireball.
The new orcs are pretty cool!
That's kinda all I got in the ways of praise. The tremorsense thing was cool, and the high elves getting an interchangeable cantrip was unique. That doesn't make me like elves though.
I hate plasmoids >=(
If 5e is no longer available on D&DBeyond after this, I'm gonna be really disappointed. Do 1DND all you like, just don't remove the current version, I beg of you!
Mostly fine, but why change the rules? 5e works perfectly.
I got excited when I heard Japan, I thought there was going to be a Kara Tur book
Say sike right now. I love 5e, don't get me wrong. It's still my go-to ttrpg, but it is far from working perfectly. From the messy lay-out of rules (there are no less than 5 different books with aspects of wilderness survival rules in them, two of which are not even sourcebooks!) to the complete shafting that features published before the release of Tasha's or even Xanathar's have received in terms of design and balance, 5e is definitely in need of at least a soft reset.
True, but do they really have to go back on the changes in MoTM? Elves, for example, got a much more interesting Trance after a long time of it being ever so slightly bland. Now they're just gonna undo that? Why? Some of the changes in 1DND are really good (like the simplified spell lists); but at the same time, some of them change things that really didn't need changing (like how halflings no longer have sub-races), or undid updates to things that desperately needed said updates.
All WoTC needed to do was tweak 5e to be more balanced, they really didn't need to release a whole new version of the game. Sometimes, I'm forced to wonder why companies fail to understand that there are simpler ways to solve problems. I do hope they're actually proof-reading this stuff!
The most confusing thing for me and my players is the human length lifespan for dragonborn.
And the rules just look messy because they want you to be creative.
