This Unearthed Arcana features new playtest content drawn from the Underdark. It continues the theme of the previous Underdark Options UA, presenting subclasses and species native to the deep places beneath the world.
The material in this UA uses the rules in the Player’s Handbook. Read about this playtest directly from the D&D Game Design Team below.

From the Game Design Team
The material in this Unearthed Arcana includes more material inspired by the Underdark, one of D&D’s most storied locations.
Like our last Unearthed Arcana, the material here touches on elements of the Underdark that have appeared previously, but which have been expanded or transformed in ways we’re not yet ready to fully reveal. Faerzress, for example, has been part of the Underdark since D1 Descent into the Depths of the Earth, and the Deep Imaskari have made their home in the deepest depths of the Lowerdark since 2003’s Underdark. More about these topics will be revealed… in time.
Right now, however, we need your help. Try these new subclasses and species out for yourself, fill out the survey that will follow, and help us make these character options fun at your table.
—Jason Tondro, Senior Game Designer
Underdark Option Highlights
This UA contains subclasses and species that might be included in a future product. Most of these subclasses and species are entirely new and have not appeared in UA before. The Circle of Spores Druid, however, is an update from a previous version that appeared in Tasha’s Cauldron of Everything.
Subclasses
This Unearthed Arcana features three new subclasses:
- Freedom Domain
- Circle of Spores
- Faerzress Sorcery
The following sections summarize each subclass and discuss some of their underlying mechanics.
Freedom Domain
The concept behind the Freedom Domain is simple: this subclass is a high-Dexterity Cleric. Some of the mechanical design of the class was borrowed from the high-Dexterity Oath of the Noble Genies Paladin designed for Forgotten Realms: Heroes of Faerûn. Previous editions—such as D&D 3e’s Freedom Domain—also had an influence on this subclass.
The spell list was designed with one question in mind: Would this spell help in a jailbreak? When the answer was yes, we tried to include that spell on the list.
We wanted the Freedom Domain’s Channel Divinity to be a low-level Freedom of Movement effect, but it was also important that this Channel Divinity be useful most of the time, even when none of the Cleric’s allies are Grappled or otherwise restricted. Design review and iteration on the design added a movement buff, ensuring that Channel Divinity is always useful.
Circle of Spores
This subclass originally appeared in Guildmaster’s Guide to Ravnica and was updated in Tasha’s Cauldron of Everything for use in the broader D&D multiverse. We have updated it now for 5.5e.
In an Underdark setting, the ability to use spores to reanimate corpses is most commonly associated with myconid sovereigns—and it’s possible your Druid learned this art from one such creature! Some flavor elements have been reworked for the Underdark setting to reflect this connection. These Druids also get Telepathy as part of this subclass, further tying it to myconids.
The “Design Notes” sidebar in the UA explains the major changes we made to this class, so we won’t discuss them here, but can expand on the choice to replace Spreading Spores. Spreading Spores, which allowed you to create a cloud of spores up to 30 feet away from you, felt like it didn’t fit with the “get into melee and raise the dead” loop of the subclass. We hope Explosive Burst encourages Druids to keep themselves and their zombies in the fray!
Faerzress Sorcery
Faerzress, the strange radiation of the Underdark, mutates creatures exposed to it for long periods. This makes it a natural power source for Underdark Sorcerers. Faerzress also has a list of distinctive magical effects: blocking teleportation and scrying, enhancing Darkvision, granting mundane weapons magical properties, and more.
The challenge for this subclass was designing cool Sorcerer abilities with a faerzress vibe, starting with the ability to create faerzress and be not just immune to the radiation’s effects but empowered by it. Adding scrying and terrain-manipulation to the spell list gave the Faerzress Sorcerer interesting options not usually available to the class. Other Sorcerer subclasses are often associated with a particular kind of damage (such as Radiant and Fire for Spellfire Sorcery); for faerzress we leaned into Lightning damage, culminating in the ability to transform into a being of pure faerzress energy.
Species

This UA also contains five new species. While many Underdark adventures focus on characters from “upstairs” traveling downwards, we wanted to provide more ways for players to explore characters who already live in the Underdark and who are fighting to protect their home. You can already play a Drow, Duergar, or Deep Gnome, but now we’re adding the following:
- Deep Imaskari
- Drider
- Illithidkin
- Kuo-toa
- Myconid
Deep Imaskari
We discussed the Deep Imaskari and their relationship to Unlight in the previous UA, so make sure you check that out! The Deep Imaskari are descended from humans, so some features (such as Resourceful) reflect this.
Most features, however, focus on their connection to Unlight. While most Underdark species have Darkvision or some other means of seeing in the dark, the Deep Imaskari instead create light wherever they go.
Drider
There are two parts to the Underdark expression of the Drider fantasy: the spider and the drow, who combine seamlessly into one deadly hunter. This drider’s abilities allow them to lure in and trap their prey. How they finish it off is dependent upon the rest of the character build.
Driders are a staple of the Underdark, but they’re a tough concept to bring to the player-facing side of the game due to their typical size and many legs. We took inspiration from the Centaur in Mordenkainen Presents: Monsters of the Multiverse for the mechanical expression of this concept.
Illithidkin
An Illithidkin is a victim (or willing participant) of mind flayer experimentation. They have access to a small selection of psionic abilities. This contrasts with our Ceremorphosis feat path from the previous UA, which requires more build investment and provides the full mind flayer experience. This species and that feat path weren’t designed to be used together, but rather represent two different ways one might run afoul of mind flayer activity.
Kuo-toa
One aspect of the kuo-toa that has captured our imagination is their relationship to their gods. They create idols out of disparate pieces (statues, body parts, household objects, etc), and sometimes those idols come to life. If you play as a kuo-toa, you’ll get access to the Find Familiar spell, but you can mix and match features of the available familiars to create your own delightful abomination!
Myconid
Like their fungal inspiration, myconids come in all shapes, sizes, and colors. They have appeared in many D&D adventures (including Baldur’s Gate 3), and we thought it would be fun to imagine myconid adventurers. What does it look like for a plant to uproot and embark on a journey?
When a myconid leaves their circle for adventure, their party becomes their new circle! Myconid abilities are all about building rapport with your team and sharing knowledge, often without needing to exchange even a word. Because of that, this species is a real “team player.”
Your Feedback Matters
We’re really looking forward to your thoughts and comments on the subclasses and feats in this UA. Once you’ve read or played with these playtest materials, be sure to fill out the survey on D&D Beyond, coming on September 17, and let us know what you think.

Posted Sep 10, 2026Rapport Spores has never been part of the official D&D 5e Circle of Spores Druid. So, if you've been using it, it's home-brew and you can continue to home-brew it with this UA update. Or, you can be a Myconid species from this UA and get Rapport Spores. And I agree with you that Blight is a thematic spell for sure, but I guess they decided to keep Confusion instead.

Posted Sep 10, 2026I'm so happy the Circle of Spores is getting revised, my OC is a Deep Gnome Spore Druidess and I can't tell you how happy I was to see that most of the things I had homebrew for the subclass is actually here. It still needs tweeking tho, we must be able to do at least one thing great, whether it is supporting, tanking, or being a dps. I feel like we're going for the support role here / sub-dps but yeah, it's not perfect. Appart from that, on the species, I agree with most here, Duergar and Deep Gnome need to be revised for 5.5 too. Deep Imaskari can be human sub-species or classified as humans, Driders are abominations and probably not the best specie to be playable in the Underdark, I could see Slyths or Gloamings instead, even Orogs could be nice as an orc sub-specie. Finally, I'm happy the Myconids get to be playable, they deserved it too and it's cool we got rid of the sun allergy that could kill them within minutes... It made them unplayable.

Posted Sep 10, 2026I've been eagerly awaiting Circle of Spores 5.5e incarnation.
I am pleased to see that you you don't lose the Symbiotic Entity form anymore if you lose the temp HP granted by it, this was always a sore sticking point with the subclass for me, and the swapped Level 10 feature does fit Spores' melee style a lot more.
Am I misreading Halo of Spores though?
"On a failed save, the target takes 1d4 Necrotic damage. On a success, the target has Disadvantage on its next attack roll before the end of its turn."
Seems like the successful save might be more of a hinderance than the fail save for the target?

Posted Sep 10, 2026The Faerzress sorcerer is awful. I really don't get the whole "faerzress blocks these things, so your magic makes you good at those", and the low-level features are just useless. Faerzress Form is really boring.
On a positive note, I really like the Freedom Domain, and the Circle of Spores looks pretty good.

Posted Sep 10, 2026I like the idea behind the god making monster's concept around familiar creation. You can make just about any beast with a challenge rating of 0 as well as the spell's other options. Combine that with the warlock class familiar extra options and third-party content options and the sky is the limit as far as customization goes for your familiar. Add curse of strad undead spirit options to the other spirit type options and you have so many options it is not even funny. Booyah!

Posted Sep 10, 2026Once again, the designers show that they believe D&D is a game meant to be played as a spellcaster. I guess martial players can get a bit of utility from the new species, but nothing else.

Posted Sep 10, 2026Kuo-toa? Really? No. As a species they have True Sight. And yet in the player version seen here, they do not. It is a core aspect to their lore. So no, these are not a playable species. It is ridiculous.

Posted Sep 10, 2026It feels incomplete and not well thought out in some areas for sure NickFerriera.
Circle of Spores:
This subclass like Necromancer in Wizard are very poorly thought through. It is highly undesirable to have very very weak pets that are a pointless nuisance at best and at worse a pain for a DM on tracking yet more actions by irrelevant and nonsensical minions.
Make undead pets worth the effort or just don't post more pointless material about them.
I take issue with raising anything up at 1 hitpoint that you can generously give away your bonus hitpoints to and likely loose the benefit of your wildshape charge use as a result on the very first hit. Is it a zombie or not, give it the full stat block including hitpoints. To emphasize this - At least add caster proficiency bonus to these undead minions' attack and damage rolls +ac stats or something for raised dead and spore servants. Maybe even SCALE THEM BY CASTER LEVEL.

Posted Sep 10, 2026Agreed on the species. Generally speaking, "large" size PCs make things needlessly more difficult for DMs. Centaur is probably worse because climbing is a weird thing to handwave. Maybe drider could be "medium", but the monster version isn't. Finally, a "species" exclusively transformed from drow by an evil goddess is a weird fit for the hero game. Drider is a nice-to-have from a third-party or homebrew. I don't think it should be official. I have less of an issue with myconid and kuo-toa, but only in a relevant setting/campaign.
Similarly I'd love more of the focus be on duergar and svirfneblin (because you get to say "svirfneblin" a bunch).

Posted Sep 10, 2026Spore Druid finally gets an update!
...It's still terrible lol. Loses half of its Circle Spells in favour of getting Charm Person, Symbiotic Entity is marginally better as a Bonus Action that doesn't end once you're out of Temp HP, but the only thing about it that scales into higher levels remains said Temp HP, which you're now also supposed to give away to your free zombie summons to make them not die instantly to a stray AoE. At least Explosive Burst supports your weak summons dying early, but it also doesn't scale beyond the initial 2d8. Fungal Infestation also remains a Reaction, conflicting with the core feature being Halo of Spores.
Fungal Body and Halo of Spores buffs are cool and thematic, but the subclass is still overall severely lacking in both capabilities and solid direction. Is it a Gish Druid? A necromancer? It's sad to see that one of the coolest Druid subclasses remains terrible, even after a second re-release.

Posted Sep 10, 2026Did 3 different designers work on the 3 different subclasses and not compare notes?
The Freedom Cleric is honestly pretty good. Solid flavor for a Cleric and useful abilities that scale well and will remain useful. Also- giving save proficiency on once of a classes dump stat through their subclass is great design and needs to be more common than just this and original Fighter Samurai.
The Spore Druid has great flavor but terrible execution of mechanics. The problem is it is trying to do too many different roles and thus to keep balance, it sucks at all of them. Is it a support caster with a damage aura? Is it a frontline melee gish? Is it a minion master? No- Its all 3 and, because of that, it is terrible at all 3 roles. If it MUST be a split focus, the 2 roles with a decent potential here are frontline melee gish and minion master. Get rid of Halo of Spores entirely or MAYBE you can keep the telepathy passive but its borderline useless if you aren't going to increase the range at least to like 30 or 60ft. Give a movement speed boost while Symbiotic Entity is active so you can actually get into the frontlines and bump the once per turn melee damage on a melee attack to replace the loss of the feature which increases Halo of Spores damage. 2d6 on a single attack per turn would still be fine considering the action economy cost and the fact you always have to be in melee to do that. Fungal Infestation- give the zombie its normal HP and let it be alive the same number of hours as your wild shape feature and it STILL would be the weakest minion a Druid can summon. Explosive Burst is weak specifically because you can't really build up an army of zombies for multiple encounters. Fix Fungal Infestation and Explosive Burst actually becomes good. Fungal Body is the only feature here that actually feels like it got a fun update. The spores moving your unconscious body is flavorful and mechanically interesting if you find yourself in that situation.
I'm not even going to touch Radiation sorcerer mechanics. Again- flavor could be interesting but it has no meaningful combat identity whatsoever until the level 14 feature and even then requires a failed save against a spell to do anything. You will fight ALOT of creatures at level 14 with magic resistance and/or legendary resistance so those failed saves will come very rarely.
Chef we need a re-fire on this meal. It has the wrong ingredients and was boiled instead of baked....

Posted Sep 10, 2026I really liked everything, but I missed having a Warlock subclass. In the 2014 (5.0) edition, the survivors of High Imaskar were considered a human ethnicity—the Imaskari. How is this handled now in the 2024 (5.5) edition?
The Deep Imaskar Aura should have a radius of at least 30 feet.
