Dragonborn
Race Details
Her father stood on the first of the three stairs that led down from the portal, unmoving. The scales of his face had grown paler around the edges, but Clanless Mehen still looked as if he could wrestle down a dire bear himself. His familiar well-worn armor was gone, replaced by violet-tinted scale armor with bright silvery tracings. There was a blazon on his arm as well, the mark of some foreign house. The sword at his back was the same, though, the one he had carried since even before he had found the twins left in swaddling at the gates of Arush Vayem.
For all her life, Farideh had known that reading her father’s face was a skill she’d been fortunate to learn. A human who couldn’t spot the shift of her eyes or Havilar’s would certainly see only the indifference of a dragon in Clanless Mehen’s face. But the shift of scales, the arch of a ridge, the set of his eyes, the gape of his teeth—her father’s face spoke volumes.
But every scale of it, this time, seemed completely still—the indifference of a dragon, even to Farideh.
Born of dragons, as their name proclaims, the dragonborn walk proudly through a world that greets them with fearful incomprehension. Shaped by draconic gods or the dragons themselves, dragonborn originally hatched from dragon eggs as a unique race, combining the best attributes of dragons and humanoids. Some dragonborn are faithful servants to true dragons, others form the ranks of soldiers in great wars, and still others find themselves adrift, with no clear calling in life.
Proud Dragon Kin
Dragonborn look very much like dragons standing erect in humanoid form, though they lack wings or a tail. The first dragonborn had scales of vibrant hues matching the colors of their dragon kin, but generations of interbreeding have created a more uniform appearance. Their small, fine scales are usually brass or bronze in color, sometimes ranging to scarlet, rust, gold, or copper-green. They are tall and strongly built, often standing close to 6½ feet tall and weighing 300 pounds or more. Their hands and feet are strong, talonlike claws with three fingers and a thumb on each hand.
The blood of a particular type of dragon runs very strong through some dragonborn clans. These dragonborn often boast scales that more closely match those of their dragon ancestor—bright red, green, blue, or white, lustrous black, or gleaming metallic gold, silver, brass, copper, or bronze.
Self-Sufficient Clans
To any dragonborn, the clan is more important than life itself. Dragonborn owe their devotion and respect to their clan above all else, even the gods. Each dragonborn’s conduct reflects on the honor of his or her clan, and bringing dishonor to the clan can result in expulsion and exile. Each dragonborn knows his or her station and duties within the clan, and honor demands maintaining the bounds of that position.
A continual drive for self-improvement reflects the self-sufficiency of the race as a whole. Dragonborn value skill and excellence in all endeavors. They hate to fail, and they push themselves to extreme efforts before they give up on something. A dragonborn holds mastery of a particular skill as a lifetime goal. Members of other races who share the same commitment find it easy to earn the respect of a dragonborn.
Though all dragonborn strive to be self-sufficient, they recognize that help is sometimes needed in difficult situations. But the best source for such help is the clan, and when a clan needs help, it turns to another dragonborn clan before seeking aid from other races—or even from the gods.

DRACONIANS
In the Dragonlance setting, the followers of the evil goddess Takhisis learned a vile ritual that let them corrupt the eggs of metallic dragons, producing evil dragonborn called draconians. Five types of draconians, corresponding to the five types of metallic dragons, fought for Takhisis in the War of the Lance: auraks (gold), baaz (brass), bozak (bronze), kapak (copper), and sivak (silver). In place of their draconic breath weapons, they have unique magical abilities.

Breath Weapon
You can use your action to exhale destructive energy. Your draconic ancestry determines the size, shape, and damage type of the exhalation. When you use your breath weapon, each creature in the area of the exhalation must make a saving throw, the type of which is determined by your draconic ancestry. The DC for this saving throw equals 8 + your Constitution modifier + your proficiency bonus. A creature takes 2d6 damage on a failed save, and half as much damage on a successful one. The damage increases to 3d6 at 6th level, 4d6 at 11th level, and 5d6 at 16th level. After you use your breath weapon, you can’t use it again until you complete a short or long rest.
Damage Resistance
You have resistance to the damage type associated with your draconic ancestry.
Languages
You can speak, read, and write Common and Draconic. Draconic is thought to be one of the oldest languages and is often used in the study of magic. The language sounds harsh to most other creatures and includes numerous hard consonants and sibilants.
sexy
There are two different weights stated in this article. Not sure which is accurate to the book. Personally I think heavier makes more sense.
i want to make a Dragonborn Rogue with Arcane Trickster archetype. When i build my character i am only able to choose "thief." Is there a way that i may choose Arcane Trickster?
As a slight edit to the race, that I think makes it better without throwing out balance is to add a 1d4 bite or claw attack as a bonus action, and/or making the breath attack a bonus action.
Happpen troops them dragonbornns am i right ❤❤❤❤❤
Is there anything on Dragonborn religions? You know? Something exclusive to their race.
You noticed that the book forgets to tell you that your unarmed strike don't do more damage even though you have Talonlike claws. Does anyone else think that this was a oversight? because it saids you have Talonlike claws for hands and feet. I mean the the bird race get better unarmed strike. Dragon talons are way sharper than eagle talons. Also have to grip about the small increase to the breath weapon every 5 levels from lv1 i mean 1D6 every 5 levels is really terrible. 2d6 is good at the start but... once your past level 11 4D6 isn't really that much damage not to enemy's off 100 hit points. This ability loses in effectiveness as you level up. 2d6 ever 4 level would be much better. Maybe every 5 levels the range increases by 5ft would also improve this ability.
I’m play the Dragon born paladin in Adventure league
The player's hand book says that the draconian are dragonborn that were affected by a dark spell from other draconian to be evil, but it can only be done to metallic dragon eggs. SO you could have a draconian sibling or family member if your "sub-race" is metallic. Nice RP note.
Could we get an official, playable, half-dragon variant based on the monster from the monster manual?
Nice
I've been playing D&D for over a decade now. I've played 2.0e, 3.0e & 3.5e, 4.0e and I've done my research into how 5e works. And while each Edition has it's ups and downs-for instance, (imo) pushing a little too hard with the MMO aspects of 4.0e, or THAC0 from 2.0-I have never seen a retcon of the lore so... juxtaposed... to the original outing of (insert thing here) and Kobolds went from dog-people to "less threatening Lizardfolk".
Simply put, this is bull... A dragonborn would never willingly serve Shar, Lolth, Bane, Ba'al, or Cyric, let alone the Queen of the EVIL Dragons, the ***** who framed Bahamut for the murder of Io's favorite pet, Tiamat!
And to insinuate, let alone outright state, that common dragons could replicate what Bahamut set out to do... What the in the infinite abyss is this crap?
For any who would like to know the ORIGINAL lore of Dragonborn (and anyone with the 3.5e Races of the Dragon can corroborate this), here it is:
Dragonborn are not a true race, not like Men or Elves, Dwarves or Drow.
No one is born a Dragonborn, they are reborn as one. Dragonborn come from all walks of life, from the shifty Rogue, to the honorable Paladin. Anyone who answers Bahamut's call to take up the fight to check Tiamat's influence in the Prime Material Plane, and even across the Multiverse, can become a Dragonborn. Once you answer the call, it takes a ritual that lasts 3 days. 24 hours of fasting and meditation/prayer, 24 hours of sleep, and 24 hours inside of a hand built dragon's egg made from the shed scales of Metallic Dragons. On the morning of the 4th day, the Human/Elf/Dwarf/Kobold/Giant/(insert Non-Evil Humanoid here) emerges, forever changed. (Technically. I'll get to that in a minute) They are no longer who they were, but three days ago. They are Dragonborn, reborn as adoptive children of the Lord of the North Wind, Bahamut, Platinum Godking of all Good Dragonkind.
Dragonborn are steril, as Bahamut would never force the life of a Dragonborn onto anyone. The choice must be made freely, and of the individual's own free will. Why? Because the life of a Dragonborn is one of sacrifice. Always traveling, always fighting against evil in general, but specifically the evil of Tiamat.
Bahamut is a kind, loving father and turns his eye to more.... risque... methods of fighting evil. Poisons and the like are fine, provided they are used for good, however, the Lord of the North Wind will never tolerate evil from his children. Transgressions happen, from time to time. No one is perfect, and Bahamut knows this. So, if one of his children start down a Dark path, he sends a messenger (most often a Celestial Gold Dragon [Ancient Wyrm age category]) to warn the individual, and should they repent, then nothing happens. But should the Dragonborn continue on the path to true Evil and use the gifts Bahamut blessed them with, the Platinum Godking strips away the form he graced the mortal with. (In game mechanics, the form is forcibly shed over a number of rounds equal to the Dragonborn's HD, so if you're level 2, it's 2 rounds. Level 30? That's 30 rounds. Each round, you take 2d6 damage from the Dragonborn form being stripped away from you)
If the mortal survives, they are no longer a Dragonborn. They are a member of their base race once more, and must return to the path of Good (or at least Neutrality) beseech Bahamut's forgiveness, and undergo the Rite of Rebirth again.
Dragonborn always fight to beat back Tiamat's influence. If they have a hobby (painting, singing, etc.) they express this in their art, and their art is secondary to the fight. Dragonborn might form attachments with friends, allies, but they have no time for romantic love, and again, are steril.
Dragonborn, according to the lore from 3.5 (Races of the Dragon) keep their armor and clothing in pristine condition. Some (players) even buy wands of Prestidigitation and use them too keep their armor/robes clean and polished.
Draconians from Dragonlance are not connected at all. Dragonborn are the Adoptive Children of Bahamut (Races of the Dragon 3.5e pg. 8) where as the Draconians are evil footsoldiers born from dark experimentation. If a Dragonborn ever saw a Draconian, they would kill it. Kill it with extreme prejudice
FUS RO DAH!!!!!
Meet the only race other than a human who doesn't have dark vision
Firbolg's do not have Dark vision as well, there are a couple of races that do not.
What about halflings, water, earth and air genasi, goliaths, aarakocra, lizardfolk, tritons, firbolg, and kenku? They're certainly not the only race without darkvision, I don't know where you got that information from.
TO MUCH CHOICE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
