Homebrew Animated Toy Species Details

Across the realms there are strange transmutative magics that can alter objects, creatures and other aspects of reality. Some of these magics can even cause objects to come to life. Constructs are made with programming to follow their creator’s instruction. Sometimes, tiny toys are imbued with this magic and gain independent thought and sentience. Whether it be due to a pact with a fiendish creature, a hiccup in the Weave, a lost spirit, or by the scheer willpower of a toy who wants to find their owner, you are a living toy.

Infused with magic, most Animated Toys look like stitched dolls or stuffed animals, but each toy had characteristics that sets them apart from the rest. For your Animated Toy, roll on the Toy Characteristics table or choose an option from it. You’re also free to come up with your own characteristic if none of the suggestions below fit your character.

Animated Toy Traits

As an Animated Toy, you have the following racial traits.

Creature Type

You are a Construct.

Size

You are Tiny.

Speed

Your walking speed is 30 feet.

Bend Imagination

You know the minor illusion cantrip.

Starting at 3rd level, you can cast the silent image spell with this trait. Starting at 5th level, you can also cast the levitate spell with this trait. Once you cast silent image or levitate with this trait, you can’t cast that spell with it again until you finish a long rest. You can also cast either of those spells using any spell slots you have of the appropriate level.

Intelligence, Wisdom, or Charisma is your spellcasting ability for these spells when you cast them with this trait (choose when you select this race).

Hover

Because of the strange magic that makes you, you can float 3 feet off the ground. You can hover at a speed equal to your movement speed. You can move across uneven terrain, up or down stairs, slopes, and the like, but you can’t hover across a change in elevation of 10 feet or more. For example, you can’t move across a 10-foot-deep-pit, nor could you hover out of the pit from the bottom.

Unusual Nature

You don’t require air, food, drink, or sleep.

False Appearance

If you are motionless at the start of combat, you have advantage on your initiative roll. Moreover, if a creature hasn’t observed you move or act, the creature has to make an Intelligence (Investigation) check against your Charisma (Deception) check to discern that you are animate.
