Homebrew Camazotz Species Details

Much like their ancestors, Camazots vary greatly from
tribe to tribe. What was once a tribe known for its large
beaks might currently be known for long, flared snouts
or a tribe known for vividly colorful plumage might
have brighter, more saturated skin tones or even
colorful fur instead of the usual dull grey or blue skin.
Although they are not as conceited as their ancestors,
these defining characteristics instill a great sense of
pride in a Camazotz.
Blindness and Books
Being effectively blind, the Camazotz developed two
forms of written language. One is used for long-ranged
legibility while the other needs to be felt to be
understood. The latter is akin to braille. It's often used
in scholarly tomes and scrolls, contracts, and other
important documents where detail is essential. The
former can be read by Camazotz from a distance as it
uses textures in lieu of characters. The textures convey
simple ideas individually, though they can be stringed
together to form more complex words, for example,
feathers are often used to represent wind, the world
above, or height, however, feathers followed by fur is
read as "flying creature" or "winged animal."
Bureaucratic entrepreneurs
The Camazotz are well known in the underdark for
being astute traders, and Camazotz cities are often a
hub for trading goods and services. That is primarily
the reason why Camazotz seen in the world above are
often travelling merchants, seeking opportunities
outside of the underdark.

Camazotz Traits

Camazotz share a number of traits in common with each other.

Age

Camazotz have relatively short lifespans, it's
very rare to see one live over 60 years.

Alignment

City dwelling Camazotz are often lawful,
while those living alone or in small colonies tend to be
more chaotic.

Size

Size. Camazotz are between 5 and 6 feet tall and
weigh between 120 and 180 pounds. Your size is
Medium.

Your base speed is 30 feet

You speak common and undercommon however, you can not read nor write

Myopia

Your vision is blurred. Outside of vague
shapes and colors, everything you see through your
eyes is considered Heavily Obscured.

Echolocation

Echolocation (120 ft.) By emitting virtually
inaudible clicks with your tongue, you are able to
interpret audible information as if it were visual. Unless
deafened, you effectively have vision and can see
through normal and magical darkness, however you
can't discern colors nor shades.

Screech

Illusions and invisibility may fool your
passive clicking, but your honing your echolocation
with a screech makes them easier to spot. Unless
deafened, you can use your bonus action to emit a high
pitched screech to detect illusions and invisible
creatures or objects within 30 feet of you with a
wisdom (perception) check instead of investigating
them physically.

Blindsight

Blindsight (5 ft.) At close range your echolocation
is extremely precise, granting you blindsight at a very
short distance.
