Homebrew Bariaur Species Details

Description

 

To those unacquainted, a bariaur is similar to a centaur, but while a centaur appears to be a mixture of human and horse features, a bariaur is a mixture of human and ram or ewe features. Below the waist, they appear like powerful rams or ewes. Their torsos are similar to those of muscular humans. The males have curling horns emerging from their foreheads, but females do not have horns. Their skin is pale tan to dark brown in color, while the coats of their lower halves are brown or golden. Their hooves are cloven.

Bariaurs typically weigh nearly 300 pounds (140 kilograms) for males and 260 pounds (120 kilograms) for females. They average a half-foot taller than most humans.

Most bariaurs wear some form of clothing on their upper torsos, be it a blouse, shirt, vest, or girdle. They often dye their fur a variety of colors or shave their pelts in stylish fashions. They wear jewelry on their horns or weave it into their hair. When ready for combat, bariaurs equip themselves with scale barding.

 

Personality

 

Bariaurs tend toward a chaotic good worldview, but if not, they're almost never evil. Lovers of freedom, most bariaurs are full of wanderlust, but they also feel a desire to defend their home planes from evil. Their carefree attitudes sometimes causes those unfamiliar with them to find them irresponsible, but this is simply an outward sign of their wanderlust. When evil shows itself, a bariaur's carefree persona is replaced with the focused stance of a hunter.

Bariaurs are social beings and very outgoing. They're slow to trust while still giving individuals the benefit of the doubt. They get along very well with elves, gnomes, and halflings and aasimar who are not too rigid in their outlook. They can work with dwarves but aren't overly fond of them. They find half-elves and half-orcs interesting and are suspicious of tieflings. They harbor a hatred for most giants, and on Ysgard would sometimes make an effort to destroy their lairs.

Lovers of play, bariaurs enjoy competing in contests of all varieties, both mental and physical, enjoying everything from story-telling competitions to "clashes of horns" where they would charge each other in a sequence of attacks similar to a jousting match. They throw festivals with singing contests and play a sport similar to polo. They enjoy the contests for their entertainment value and do not take most results too seriously. This love of contests extends to an eagerness to "test" visitors to their realm in such games. Bariaurs need times of play as much as most creatures need times of rest and would find times for games even on the most serious of epic quests of honor.

Bariaurs are known for great courage; they fear little—except perhaps sadness. A bariaur would do everything in his or her power to help lessen the sadness of a friend, even if it meant traveling the planes.

As a rule, bariaurs pay a lot of attention to their appearance, making an effort to express their originality through their style of dress and choice of jewelry.

A Bariaur has the following racial traits

Ability Score Increase

For a male Bariaur, your Strength score increases by 1, and your Constitution score increases by 2. For a female Bariaur, your Intelligence score increases by 1, and your Wisdom score increases by 2.

Age

Bariaur have a similar lifespan to humans, reaching up to around 100 years old.

Alignment

The Majority of Bariaur are Chaotic Good, but they tend to be any non-evil alignment.

Size

Bariaur are around the same height range as humans. Your size is medium.

Speed

Your base walking speed is 40 feet

Darkvision

You can see in dim light within 60 feet of you as if it were bright light, and in darkness as if it were dim light. You can’t discern colour in darkness, only shades of grey.

Ram (male Bariaur)

You may use your horns to ram enemies. You can use your horns to make unarmed strikes. If you hit with them, you deal bludgeoning damage equal to 1d8 + your Strength modifier.

Charge (male Bariaur)

If you move at least 30 feet straight towards a target then hit it with a Ram attack on the same turn, the target takes an additional 2d8 bludgeoning damage.

Keen Senses (female Bariaur)

Your sharp sense of smell and hearing gives you proficiency in the Perception skill.

Magic Resistance (female Bariaur)

Your innate magic resistance gives you a +3 bonus to all saving throws against spells.
