Homebrew Conjoined Twins Species Details

Rare though they are, conjoined twins are inseparable siblings and can be born to most races. With two heads joined to one torso, they often have broad shoulders and a wider chest. Each twin has a separate personality and name. They may have matching names or names that can be combined into one.

PLAYING CONJOINED TWINS

At the DM's discretion, you have the option of playing as one of the conjoined twins along with another player or playing both twins as a single player. If sharing with another player, you will control the arm and leg on your side of the body and the other player will control the arm and leg on their side. If playing alone, the DM will also determine whether each twin has their own class or if they share one.

Creating Your Character

At 1st level, you choose one of the game’s races. Alternatively, you can choose one of the following lineages. If you choose the lineage, you share certain characteristics of your chosen race such as size, creature type, and life span, but now possess your lineage’s racial traits.

Two Players Sharing One Body

Class: Each player has their own class and levels.

Ability Scores: Each player has their own Intelligence, Wisdom, and Charisma scores. Both players share their Strength, Dexterity, and Constitution scores.

Actions and Movement: Each player has their own set of actions and movement. Both players may roll initiative or they may choose to share an initiative. If one player chooses not to move on their turn, the other player gains the benefit of the dash action before the end of their next turn.

Armor: Both players share an armor class. Only one player needs to be proficient in the type of armor you wear, and this imposes no penalties to the other player, regardless of their armor proficiencies or lack thereof.

Skill Checks and Saving Throws: Only one player needs to roll for Athletics, Dexterity, and Stealth Checks as well as Strength and Dexterity Saving Throws. Decide together which player will roll. Intelligence, Wisdom, and Charisma saving throws are rolled individually.

Hit Points: Each player has their own pool of hit points, determined by the hit point die associated with their class plus your Constitution modifier. However, attacks target both twins as they share most of their body. Damage and healing are split between each player—Each twin takes half of the damage dealt in every attack, but also heals half of the hit points restored from healing spells, potions, and other restorative properties.

Spell Effects: You count as one creature when targeted by spell effects.

Weapons: You have developed some additional stamina due to your practice controlling only one arm. You are able to hold a two-handed melee weapon with one hand, provided that you are proficient with it. Ranged weapons such as a longbow, shortbow, or crossbow must be specially tailored with an automatic shooting mechanism, unless your twin is also proficient and attacking with the same weapon.

Falling Unconscious: If one player falls unconscious you do not fall prone. Instead, the other player maintains control of your body until you regain consciousness or they also fall unconscious. You automatically fail death saving throws from taking damage only while both players are unconscious.

One Player Playing Both Twins

Consult with your DM to determine whether you will be playing your twins as separate classes or as one class and two personalities. If playing as separate classes, consult the previous section. Otherwise, continue character creation as normal, but be sure to create separate personality traits, ideals, bonds, and flaws for each twin.

If you play as one class and it grants you access to concentration spells, you have advantage on Constitution saving throws to maintain concentration, as both personalities are focusing on the spell.

Quirks

Two souls sharing a singular body can result in some unique traits for one or both twins.

Conjoined Twins Traits

When you create a character using a lineage option here, follow these additional rules during character creation.

Ability Score Increases

When determining your ability scores, you may either apply the ability score increases from your chosen race, increase one score by 2 and increase a different score by 1, or increase three different scores by 1.

Your class’s “Quick Build” section offers suggestions on which scores to increase. You’re free to follow those suggestions or to ignore them. Whichever scores you decide to increase, none of the scores can be raised above 20.

Age

Conjoined twins tend to live about as long as individuals from their original race.

Alignment

Each personality may have their own alignment, however drastic differences in alignment can tip the scale toward chaos and lead to conflict and arguments between the twins. Generally the twins must eventually compromise or come to an agreement in order to accomplish their goals.

Creature Type

Every creature in D&D, including every player character, has a special tag in the rules that identifies the type of creature they are. Most player characters are of the Humanoid type. You are the same creature type outlined in your chosen race.

Here’s a list of the game’s creature types in alphabetical order: Aberration, Beast, Celestial, Construct, Dragon, Elemental, Fey, Fiend, Giant, Humanoid, Monstrosity, Ooze, Plant, Undead. These types don’t have rules themselves, but some rules in the game affect creatures of certain types in different ways. For example, the text of the cure wounds spell specifies that the spell doesn’t work on a creature of the Construct type.

Size

Though you have additional organs and a wider torso, you maintain the size of your chosen race, either Medium or Small.

Speed

Your base walking speed is 30 feet. If your chosen race grants you other movements, such as a swimming or flying speed, you may apply that as well.

Darkvision

You can see in dim light within 60 feet of you as if it were bright light, and in darkness as if it were dim light. You can't discern color in darkness, only shades of gray.

Languages

Your character can speak the same languages specified by your chosen race. Alternatively, you speak Common and each personality speaks one additional language — it does not have to be the same one.

If you are replacing your race with a lineage, you retain any languages you had and gain no new languages.

Second Sight

Having two sets of eyes has trained you to notice more details. You are proficient in the Perception skill.

Iron Stomachs

You have advantage on saving throws against poison, and you have resistance against poison damage.

Powerful Build

You count as one size larger when determining your carrying capacity and the weight you can push, drag, or lift.

Unspoken Bond

You and your twin have always been together, and working in tandem has opened your minds to silent communication. You can speak telepathically to your twin.

Ever Vigilant

During a long rest, one twin can stay awake while the other sleeps. Each twin requires a minimum of four hours of sleep in order to benefit from the long rest. While your twin sleeps, you may only participate in light activity such as reading, talking, eating, or standing watch, otherwise your twin will wake.
