Homebrew Charr Species Details
God Slayers
The charr know no fear. With their engines of destruction, they have killed their gods, and fight to retake their homelands with unmatched ferocity. Hounded by the ghosts of their fallen enemies, every day is a fight for survival for a member of the High Legions.
Physiology
The charr are a bi-pedal feline race. Their fur comes in a variety of colours and patterns, and their mouths filled with sharp teeth for piercing meat. Though carnivorous by nature, charr have adapted to survive on food from a variety of sources. Their fur patterns are reminiscent of many wild felines - lynxes, leopards, and lions to name a few - and many grow a mane along the center of their neck. Though bi-pedal, charr are able to disarm and run on all fours.
For the Legions
From birth, charr swear fealty to one of the four High Legions. The Ash, Blood, and Iron Legions maintain a tenuous alliance, but the Flame Legion opposes them all. Each legion hosts charr of all skills and abilities, but are often associated with specific behaviours and skills. The Legions are strict military hierarchies - each is ruled by an Imperator, and the chain of command is clear and unbroken from the Imperator all the way to the lowliest grunt.
Families Forged in War
Charr have been at war since long before written record. Whether with their ancestral enemies, the ape-like grawl, or with the newer and far more dangerous threat of humankind, the charr see every day as a battle. In addition to the hierarchical nature of the legions, charr do not form family units in the same manner as other races. Charr rarely mate for life, and their families are born not of the blood in their veins but the blood on the battlefield. Trained in the fahrar, young charr form the warbands to which they swear allegiance. A warbandmate is to the charr as a blood sibling might be to a human or elf, and to break that bond casts a charr to the lowest rung of society: that of a gladium, one without a warband. Parentage is unimportant in the ranks of the Legion.
God-Slayers
The charr of the Ash, Iron, and Blood Legions know no gods and fear no gods. They killed their gods long ago, mortal creatures touted as divinity by the treacherous Flame Legion. Though the Flame Legion still recognizes power in divinity, the other Legions staunchly oppose power gained through divine means. Paladins are an extreme rarity among the three godless Legions, and those who exist gain their magic through meditation, study, and an innate arcane connection with the ideals of their Oath and not from the divine itself. Rather, a divine being is seen as a creature to be conquered and overcome, not worshipped.
Engines of War
The charr are living weapons. Their claws easily pierce flesh, but their true power comes from that of a mind. Though behemoths of fur and muscle, the charr also count themselves among the cleverest races. Through an eternity of war, charr are known to be exceptional strategists, in particular those of the Blood Legion. Many are as stealthy as their feral feline counterparts, but the greatest achievement of the charr race is their engineering prowess. Their cities are protected and opponents felled with powerful siege weaponry, creative and devastating in their designs.
