Homebrew Awakened Skull Species Details

You are are an awakened skull, animated by some form of cosmic joke, divine intervention or a Mage experiment gone rogue.

Whatever the cause, you are where you are and have little to few memories of your previous life or what brought about this change (other than your obvious, unfortunate? death).

Although memories of your previous life are somewhat fleeting and blurred, hopefully at some time they may return more clearly. One thing is for sure, between your skull, your eyeballs and the rattling of your teeth, someone, somewhere has a lot to answer for...

Awakened Skull Traits

Your Flying Skull character has the following racial traits.

Ability Score Increase

When determining your character’s ability scores, increase one of those scores by 2 and a different score by 1, or increase three different scores by 1. Follow this rule regardless of the method you use to determine the scores, such as rolling or point buy.

Languages

Your character can speak, read, and write Common and one other language that you and your DM agree is appropriate for the character. The writing element might currently be a small issue and will rely on using your teeth or some other more inventive means.

The Player’s Handbook offers a list of widespread languages to choose from. The DM is free to add or remove languages from that list for a particular campaign.

Creature Type

You are a Monstrosity, at one time you were another, but right now fate has dealt you this type.

Every creature in D&D, including every player character, has a special tag in the rules that identifies the type of creature they are. Most player characters are of the Humanoid type. A race option presented here tells you what your character’s creature type is.

Here’s a list of the game’s creature types in alphabetical order: Aberration, Beast, Celestial, Construct, Dragon, Elemental, Fey, Fiend, Giant, Humanoid, Monstrosity, Ooze, Plant, Undead. These types don’t have rules themselves, but some rules in the game affect creatures of certain types in different ways. For example, the text of the cure wounds spell specifies that the spell doesn’t work on a creature that has the Construct type.

Size

You are Small. Given the lack of...well everything, your size is smaller than what you remember.

Speed

Given your lack of appendages, your walking speed is 0 feet. For some unknown reason the cosmos has instead gifted you the ability to fly and can hover.

Chattering Teeth

In addition to being reborn as a living skull, you notice your teeth seem to be a little on edge. At times they rattle and shake on their own accord and make for a dangerous weapon in the right han...mouth.

Biting Tongue

Given your current circumstances, you have a more unique view on life and your wit, sarcasm and general retort has gained a dangerous edge. You know the vicious mockery spell.

What is disconcerting is quite how you can communicate or even use this ability due to the lack of an actual tongue, some things are best not dwelt upon.

Natural Armor

Given your bony construction you gain a bonus to natural armour.
