Homebrew Dragocentaur Species Details

The group of bandits were scattered and panicking. What was meant to be a romp across Myrrkoth's arid plains became a fight for survival in a matter of seconds. The bandit captain ducked behind a dead tree as he attempted to pat the flames off of his cloak. The grass beneath him was chocked and singed, accompanied by the hopping of pebbles as their foe galloped nearby. The cries of the captain's allies being slain by the savage warrior mixed with the clashing of metal pierced the air in a cacophony of pain. Just then, all was silent. The bandit captain felt his lungs tighten as he peered over his cover. His allies and their materials were strewn about with smoke dancing in the wind around them. In the center of the carnage was a horned, female warrior with red hair and deep green eyes. Her spear and shield decorated with blood dripped down to her hooves. The stipes on her sides appeared as sharp as daggers. She caught sight of the cowardly bandit and began to charge. This Dragocentaur was the last thing he ever saw.

Thousands of years ago, a cataclysmic event occurred in the pocket realm of Myraga in which a piercing frost enveloped the majority of the world. The ancient dragons feared they may not survive the cold, and so tried to find ways to continue their lineage. After trial and error, an early ancestor of the modern day horse was found to be capable of interbreeding. The result of this combination birthed a new subrace of the common Dragonborn known as Dragocentaurs.

The Result of Draconic Evolution

As their name might imply, Dragocentaurs share traits amongst dragons and centaurs alike. Members of this race are known to posses scaly horns of various shapes and lengths, as well as style their hair in ways to work around them. They have sharp teeth, hooves, and tails that are more like dragons than horses. They have a humanlike torso that is typically armored by small scales. All Dragocentaurs have the ability to breathe fire, stand around the height of a tall human or horse, usually muscular in figure and weigh around 300 to 400 pounds. Differences typically present themselves based on scale coloration and amount as well as patterns in their hair.

Lives of Honor and Battle

Dragocentaur culture revolves around their pride and tenacity. The story of how they came to be is passed down from generation to generation, and most interpret this tale as a reason for their superiority amongst other races. Since they have been around a while in the realm of Myraga, many are suited to thrive in the harshest of climates and usually see it as a challenge. Survival is not taken for granted amongst the Dragocentaurs, so they choose to display the gift of life though displaying their strength. This usually means members of the race serve in tribal conflicts or large scale wars as warriors and battle mounts. In order for this to happen, most Dragocentaurs need to see how battle capable their new allies are. Their alignments will typically range as well, with most being found on the Chaotic spectrum.

Dragocentaur Traits

Your draconic heritage manifests in a variety of traits you share with other Dragocentaurs.

Charge

In combat, if your Dragocentaur moves at least 30ft (20ft in the playtest guide) towards a target and makes a melee attack in the same turn, you can roll your weapon damage twice and combine the scores. This ability can only be used once in between short or long rests.

Hooves

Dragocentaurs’ hooves count as melee weapons and they are proficient in them. Targets who are hit with a hoof take 1d6 plus your Strength modifier worth of bludgeoning damage.

Equine Build

  • Dragocentaurs count as one size larger when determining the weight of what they can pull or push and what they can carry.
  • A Medium or smaller creature can ride on your back. This can only be done if the Dragocentaur allows it and they still move independently (unlike a regular horse which the rider can control).
  • If a Dragocentaur needs to climb that requires hands and feet, each foot of movement counts as 4ft rather than the usual 1ft.

Ability Score Increase

Your Strength score increases by 2, and your Charisma score increases by 1.

Age

Dragocentaurs age at the same rate as humans do, but they can live to around 200.

Size

Dragocentaurs will tower over their human counterparts, standing at between 6 and 7ft tall. Their size is Medium.

Speed

Your base walking speed is 40 feet.

Fire Dragon Ancestry

You have draconic ancestry. Choose one type of dragon from the Draconic Ancestry table. Your breath weapon and damage resistance are determined by the dragon type, as shown in the table.

Draconic Ancestry
Dragon Damage Type Breath Weapon

Brass Fire 5 by 30 ft. line (Dex. save)

Gold,Red Fire 15 ft. cone (Dex. save)

Fire Breath

You can use your action to exhale a plume of flames. When you breathe fire, each creature in the area of the exhalation must make a saving throw, the type of which is determined by your draconic ancestry. The DC for this saving throw equals 8 + your Constitution modifier + your proficiency bonus. A creature takes 2d6 damage on a failed save, and half as much damage on a successful one. The damage increases to 3d6 at 6th level, 4d6 at 11th level, and 5d6 at 16th level. After you breathe fire, you can’t use it again until you complete a short or long rest.

Fire Damage Resistance

You have resistance to burning damage.

Languages

You can speak, read, and write Common, Sylvan and Draconic. Draconic is thought to be one of the oldest languages and is often used in the study of magic. The language sounds harsh to most other creatures and includes numerous hard consonants and sibilants.
