Homebrew cosmonaut Species Details
Those who think of the cosmos at all consider it vast, made of distant realms, but cosmic influence can be felt throughout the planes. It sometimes manifests in beings made purely of cosmic energy, beings who carry the power of the cosmic in their blood. Cosmonauts are these beings, born of the vast cosmos.
The cosmos is inhospitable having a vast vacuum, solar flames, boundless space, and endless planets make the cosmos deadly for even a short time. The powerful cosmonauts, however, don’t face such troubles when venturing into the cosmos or the mortal world. They adapt well to the mingled elements of the Material Plane, and they sometimes visit, whether of their own volition or compelled by magic their home among the stars. Some cosmonauts can adopt a mortal guise and travel incognito.
Occasionally, cosmonauts result from exposure to a surge of cosmic power, through phenomena such as a mistake when performing a very high power cosmic spell or a planar convergence. Cosmic energy saturates any creatures in the area and might alter their nature.
Heirs to Cosmic Power
They resemble humans but have skin like that of moving galaxies, and glowing white eyes. Cosmonauts do not have mouths and instead speak psychically, and can target anyone that they can see only being heard by the things that they wish to hear them. If a cosmonaut has an object from the thing that they are trying to speak to, they do not have to see their target and can instead communicate with them at will. The cosmic blood flowing through their veins manifests as magical power. An example of there cosmic power is their eternal life, when a cosmonaut is killed they do not truly die they simply return to their home in the cosmos and will return to wherever they died after a thousand or so years.
Seen in silhouette, a cosmonaut can usually pass for human. A given cosmonaut might have some features reminiscent of the race that they spend the most time with (pointed ears from an elf, a stockier frame and thick hair from a dwarf, small hands and feet from a halfling, exceedingly large eyes from a gnome, and so on).
Some cosmonauts live as outcasts, driven into exile for their unsettling appearance and strange magic, or assuming leadership of savage humanoids and weird cults in untamed lands. Others gain positions of great influence, especially where cosmic beings are revered. A few cosmonauts leave the Material Plane to find refuge in their home among the stars.
Wild and Confident
Cosmonauts rarely lack confidence, seeing themselves as equal to almost any challenge in their path. This certainty might manifest as graceful self-assurance in one cosmonaut and as arrogance in another. Such self- confidence can sometimes blind cosmonauts to risk, and their great plans often get them and others into trouble.
Too much failure can chip away at even a cosmonaut's sense of self, so they constantly push themselves to improve, honing their talents and perfecting their craft.
Cosmonaut Lands
As rare beings, cosmonauts might go their entire lives without encountering another one of their kind. There are no great cosmonaut cities or empires. Cosmonauts seldom have communities of their own and typically adopt the cultures and societies into which they fell into. Many cosmonauts lose themselves in teeming cities, where their distinctiveness hardly raises an eyebrow in places accustomed to a variety of different people.
