Homebrew Badgerfolk Species Details

Badgerfolk are small to medium, furry humanoids that resemble badgers. They’re quiet, wise creatures and are typically guided by their own internal moral compass and the inherant need to protect their home and the nature that surrounds it. They are kind and friendly, until their home is threatened, becoming ferocious and viciously protective.

They make for good Clerics, Druids, and Rangers.

Burrowed Living

Badgerfolk still retain the sharp claws of their namesake and use them to carve out their burrows. These are usually warm places, pierced by sun tunnels that cast light into their humble abodes. Clans lived in connected burrows, though each smaller family - or individuals - within tend to have their own space. Much like dragons, Badgerfolk like to collect things, though these can be small amounts of trinkets, flowers planted into their home, or interesting finds from adventures. When dealing with guests, Badgerfolk are very mindful of their possessions, but will happily offer you a hot beverage and a snack. Just don't sit in their favourite armchair.

Adventurous Soul

As protective as they are of their homes, the longer lifespan of Badgerfolk gives them time to go explore the world and discover new lands. They often roam to check up on other areas around them, ensuring no evil has befallen them, and rising up against it if it has. They will usually ensure their burrow is well protected and secure in the hands of a trusted clan member before going on such adventures, and will bring back curiosities to their clan, either as proof of their wild travels, or simply as a sourvenir. For Badgerfolk who do not return, their burrow is considered a solemn place. 

Wise Clan Leaders

A Badgerfolk who has travelled and discovered much about the world, and truly connected with it, is said to be wiser than most. Once these Badgerfolk reach their final decades, they become clan leaders, guiding younger Badgerfolk who wish to go and explore the world around them. When their homeland is threatened, they are usually the first to step forwards to find the culprits and figure out a solution, whether that be with their minds, or their claws.

Badgerfolk Names

Usually named after the nature around them, but also from names picked up on adventures, especially memorable ones, Badgerfolk take on a wild variety of names, often choosing their own once they reach maturity. Until then, they go by their cub names which tend to be short.

Cub Names: Acorn, Bean, Fig, Honey, Kernel, Radish, Pecan, Spud, Truffle, Walnut
Chosen Names: Bramblewood, Cliffton, Darkwild, Footfall, Hillderstone, Lakenwatch, Oakenbach, Riverbend, Willowsap, Undermeadow

Your badgerfolk character has the following racial traits

Ability Score Increase

Choose one ability score to increase by 2, and another by 1.

Age

Badgerfolk mature quickly compared to humans, reaching adulthood by age 12. Their lifespans however can reach up to 300 years.

Alignment

Nearly all Badgerfolks favor chaos over law. However, they are driven by an internal moral compass which tends to keeps them good.

Size

Badgerfolk come in quite the array of sizes, from as little as 3 foot, to as large as 6 foot. Your size is either Small or Medium.

Speed

Your base walking speed is 30 feet, and you can burrow 10 feet.

Darkvision

You have a badger's nocturnal traits. You can see in dim light within 60 feet of you as if it were bright light, and in darkness as if it were dim light. You can’t discern color in darkness, only shades of gray.

Keen Senses

You have advantage on Wisdon (Perception, Survival, etc) checks that rely on smell.

Badger Claws

You are proficient with your unarmed strikes, which deal 1d4 slashing damage on a hit.

Adventurer

You have proficiency in the Survival skill.

Natural Armour

You have advantage on Strength (Athletics) or Dexterity (Acrobatics) checks against being grappled or breaking a grapple thanks to your thick hide. This does not apply to the shove action.

Languages

You can speak, read, and write Common and Badgertongue.
